Dear “Sister Caroline”
We missed you and Grace at our Kraus meeting on November 4th,. Your telegram arrived just as the quests arrived and was mad at the beginning of the meeting making us all realize that you were with us in spirit- [We were] thirty percent and twenty eight staged for luncheon - we were afraid it might be too cold or windy for some of the members to have the exercises indoors, the enclosed poem,by [Eloise Farr], was read at our luncheon and after luncheon we wandered about the building and our to see our tree- a healthy young [kin oak], well shaped and occupy me

One of the delightful surprises of the day was the [anomaly] of Dr Jenny Merriel. She is living with her nephew in Hollis and he bought her over. She has grown thin and led, her just as interested and alert as ever. She paid a beautiful tribute to Mrs Kraus which I wish some of our young people of modern education might have heard. She said she was starting her eighteenth year and greatly interested in the problems of the world. The same Kraus spirit prevailed and we all had a happy day

I met your Frank at the theater on Friday major and was glad to hear that you are all well. It was so will of Frank to come over and speak to us. Our Frank Club had occurred most of the second balcony and a four seats in the first balcony to see [Madrid] “School for Husbands” as that is how I happened to be there- I have grown to be such a [exuberant] that I seldom go to the city- we have had such glorious week ends all face we have enjoyed exploring Long Island in the Buick and have discovered many beautiful drives.

My dear Mrs. Meleney,
Indeed it was a most delightful party that Mrs. Wadleton gave us planned and carried out so perfectly! You and Miss Grace had a share in it and we all join in thanking you too.
The "Kraus girls" will long remember the Bronxville meeting, sincerely hoping that their hstesses were not overtired for they seemed to think of everything that could give pleasure.
I hope your evening party was a great success and that Dr. Meleney will gain steadily and both you and he will have a lovely summer, Miss Grace also.
With love, affectionately

Dear Mrs Meleney:
Perhaps you would like this copy of the article I wrote about Mrs Kraus for the Committee of Nineteen. I am sorry I did not have it with me last summer when you were preparing your paper.
College has opened with the largest registration we have ever had, so I have had quite a problem trying to make the building accommodate us. I hope you are well and that you were able to enjoy that wonderful September weather at the dear old Vineyard.
Miss Roethgen joins me in love and good wishes to you all.
Sincerely your friend,
Anna E Harvey.

Dearest Mrs Meleney,
Let me thank you for your loving good letter, & for sending your “Lawyer- son” Clarence, with the beautiful flowers. What a “dear” boy he is ! all of your boys are “dear”,- and your daughter also!- I was glad to hear such good accounts
[page 2]
Of all the members of your family, - Mr Meleney included. And you too, dear friend; - although seeing you but rarely- we are near you in our thoughts and with our loving good wishes.- I appreciate and love all my Kindergarten daughters- yet, some of them stand closer to me, - as for instance- you, dear Carrie. The greatest
[page 3]
The greatest blessing, however, has come to one- in having my beloved adopted daughter Emma; without her- I do not think , I could have “lived- on”- especially these last three years. - Now , having reached 80 years- I feel younger than for many years, and am “full of energy”.- The good news about Robert & his family- We were glad to hear. You are a blessed Mother “in your children and family relations.- This has grown
[page 4]
To be quite a letter, - & I wanted to write only a few lines. Thus one is carried away- “talking to a friend.- We are well; and we are “out” in the air- whenever ther weather permits.-
With love from Emma & myself-
Affectionately yours\

My dear Mrs Meleney,
Dearest Carrie Cait,
I had a letter from Anna Harvey, saying that you & yours were at the Vineyard. And we were glad to know, that you had escaped the great of the City.- I thank you for your letter from Mt. Holyoke. All you said, bespeaks the loving care & fore-thought for the many members of your beloved family. We trust, that you had “good news” from Robert

At the Border of Mexico & from his family. Soon - we hope - they will be re-united.- You are a happy woman, dear Carrie, - & the blessings of the children & your husband “record” themselves in you. - I was so glad to see you dear happy face at the Meeting and Reception on the Campus, when Mrs Hill was so kind & thoughtful in behalf of all,- and to both, Emma & myself. I was not at all

Dear & beloved Mrs Meleney,
My dear Carrie Cait,
I want to tell you of my appreciation that- both you & Mr Meleney came to honor our Association, & to say so many good & loving words.- I hope - you are well, & that no harm came to you- because of the effort to come all the way from your home. You, both, looked well & soo young- the expressions of happiness.- I am sorry , that I could not have had the pleasure of
[page 2]
Of having had you by my side; but - my ear trouble and the “giving out” so much vital strength - I needed to have my beloved daughter by my side- preventing her to sit among her class-mates. - The Luncheon was very beautiful, - and it was a sight to rejoice- seeing the happy faces. - I shall hope to see you before you go to the country! You have many cares, but also many joys. - I am
[page 3]
Well, and in the loving care of my daughter Emma, who loves & admires you- as also I do.- Some time ago you spoke about moving to New York City. It will be so good to have you here ! - My warm love & greetings I send to the members of your “family entire”, foremost to Mr Meleney- whom I always connect with the Knight on the Book- cover of Froebel’s Mother Play Book.- Hoping, that all of you

My beloved Kindergarten daughter,
Carrie Cait meleney,
Your birthday letter
Was received- giving me very great pleasure. The spirit enlivening all you said- is worthy of your elevated thoughts & feelings. I thank you- for all you said! And this leads me to the “connecting thought” of what you are and have done for your large
[page 2]
Family & circle of friends - you “blessed dear Mother”- Do not make an “effort” to come & see me - much as I should love to have you with me. We are near each other, - and “in communion” all the while.- All the members of your family are dear to me; as your children matured- my loving interest has grown. I hope- the “tonic” of the hills
[page 3]
Has really done you good, dear friend. And how happy Grace must have been - to have you with her for a while- “exclusively” .- Your “thought” of my father & another has touched me deeply. I am now seventy- nine years ``young”; and I cannot realize this! God’s blessing has been with me- all my life long! And that I have my beloved daughter Emma with me ! she send her loving regards to you!- And I send a heart
[page 4]
Full of love, & good wishes to you- for “renewed strength & health “- I have had many loving letters & messages for my birthday; and I have a “thankful joy” in my hears for the love of so many friends- God bless me with.-

My dear Carrie Cait Meleney,
Mt thoughts have been so frequently with you, - that your letter came almost - “as an answer”, - We are very, very sorry, and grieved, to hear that you have been - & are yet suffering; & the members of your family too. The “Grippe” is a terrible thing, Emma & I - we also have battled with the same since before Easter. Now- we begin to recuperate, - & it is goof to hear from friends. This will be the first real letter I am going to write. Dearest, - you will have to take “tender care” of yourself- so as to be th ejoy of the members of your large family. It is a real blessing. - your “invited” loving family. - Of course, you enjoyed reading about [Petluzze]- who is an inspiration
[page 2]
[Pestaluzze]- followed Rossau; - “to return to Nature.” Frobel was Pestalozzi' best pupil & follower. Mr Krays was a “true Pestaloggian” he knew Froebel, - & was a disciple of that great Man.- Froebel rose for beyond Pestalozzi’s ideal - in using objects, & His dominant ideal being “Self-activity”- he could not be satisfied with any educational process that ended with the development of the receptive & reflective powers. - Pestalozzi & Froebel inseparable The great [Disturbing] propagated and advanced both.- I will not enlarge upon this, -as you are aware of it- just as much as I am. - Do not trouble your dear mind- that you are unable to come to New York. We know- you are “with us”, - and - we are “with you”.- We love you- & - of course- miss you
[page 3]
You do not say anything about dear Grace! How you must miss, having her with you.- May 10th. I will finish this letter now. - From the Hughes family, Toronto I have had no news lately; the last I heard - was an about agonized letter from Mrs Hughes- because of her beloved San Chester- who joined the Army in Canada, - & has gone- we believe - with the rest “to the front”. Laura is the “comforter” in that dear family.- The War is “terrible”. God give us peace !- “Peace on Earth- to men of good will I pray .- The beautiful Park is in its glory - of the new “green”. - We send our love & good wishes to all the members of your family.- Good bye- for to day. Affectionately- always your Kgten Mother

My dear Mrs Meleney,
Your letters always give me joy! - I am truly sorry to hear from you- how persistently and seriously you have been troubled with bronchitis. It proves, that you have to be very careful.- I too, have been suffering sincerely; but - I am glad to say- that I am “about & doing”. For several day- I was unable to utter a word. However-
[page 2]
I was able to tell a short Christmas story to a delightful crowd of little children.- Dear Mrs Meleney- we had a charming Christmas festival last Saturday. I know, you would have enjoyed it as much as I did ! A great charm- to me - was, that a number of our former graduates - now married - had brought their children ! Oh !the happiness shining from their faces.-
Of course, we shall be delighted to have you call some afternoon, as you say, - and also to meet Ms. Tappen .- The best of [illegible] ideas- as I read
[page 3]
About them,- or as our friend who hear her, & even attended her classes in Rome- are derived from Froebel. Her saying: if giving the children time “to think”, - has been compromised in Mr Kraus saying : “Make haste slowly”. Surely- Froebel- following Nature- allowed dur time for development & growth in all things! - It does me always good- when you say : “that you love to think of the days when I was in the midst of my children. Dear Carrie - I am trule blessed in my “Kgten-Daughters “love”.- When you are well again
[page 4]
We shall hope to see you in our new home.- We often think of you- & your large and happy family circle; Christmas joys will truly surround you and Mr. Meleney.- Our “good wishes” go out to all of you.-
Emma joins me - in sending love.
Affectionately
