My dear friend:
How very kind and thoughtful of you to write me such a delightful description. If the luncheon, and to think of this being 6 at the table of 50 year graduates surly you were honor quests, I wish that I had been there to help celebrate. I think it is wonderful to find 5 after 50 years and how lovely for thee to honor dear Madam Kraus’ birthday by placing flowers by the memorial. I have never seen the memorial. I hope that I may

My dear Mrs. Meleney,
Indeed it was a most delightful party that Mrs. Wadleton gave us planned and carried out so perfectly! You and Miss Grace had a share in it and we all join in thanking you too.
The "Kraus girls" will long remember the Bronxville meeting, sincerely hoping that their hstesses were not overtired for they seemed to think of everything that could give pleasure.
I hope your evening party was a great success and that Dr. Meleney will gain steadily and both you and he will have a lovely summer, Miss Grace also.
With love, affectionately

We missed you and Grace at our Kraus meeting on November 4th,. Your telegram arrived just as the quests arrived and was mad at the beginning of the meeting making us all realize that you were with us in spirit- [We were] thirty percent and twenty eight staged for luncheon - we were afraid it might be too cold or windy for some of the members to have the exercises indoors, the enclosed poem,by [Eloise Farr], was read at our luncheon and after luncheon we wandered about the building and our to see our tree- a healthy young [kin oak], well shaped and occupy me

One of the delightful surprises of the day was the [anomaly] of Dr Jenny Merriel. She is living with her nephew in Hollis and he bought her over. She has grown thin and led, her just as interested and alert as ever. She paid a beautiful tribute to Mrs Kraus which I wish some of our young people of modern education might have heard. She said she was starting her eighteenth year and greatly interested in the problems of the world. The same Kraus spirit prevailed and we all had a happy day

Dear Mrs Meleney:
Perhaps you would like this copy of the article I wrote about Mrs Kraus for the Committee of Nineteen. I am sorry I did not have it with me last summer when you were preparing your paper.
College has opened with the largest registration we have ever had, so I have had quite a problem trying to make the building accommodate us. I hope you are well and that you were able to enjoy that wonderful September weather at the dear old Vineyard.
Miss Roethgen joins me in love and good wishes to you all.
Sincerely your friend,

April 12th 1901.
Dear Mrs. Meleney,
It was so very kind of you to think of us and send us such charming evidences of your thought at the beautiful Easter season! You must be very proud of your chorister boys; they make a most charming picture, and I thank you very much indeed for giving me the privilege of sharing in what I know must be your great pleasure in the little group portrayed. I am so glad to have Robert's picture, and hope some day to make the acquaintance of the true original Edmund and Frank. Are they all really singers, or is it a costume only for the very pretty pictorial effect? Will has much delight in his little Easter cherubs, and I send his thanks with mine.
I would have written earlier, but our old town is in a buzz and hence such as it never knew before with the work of preparation for our coming Exposition (from which we hope and expect great things), and what with committee meetings and work for the Women's Department, in addition to all our Kindergarten undertakings, I really have not a minute of time that is not due my boy. He has been a little ailing, but is now better, and but for a bad cold from which my sister is suffering just now we are all quite well, as I hope may be the case with you. I hope Mme. Kraus is in good health. Miss Holmes has gone to the I. K. A. meeting in Chicago, and we are anxious to have her back and hear her news. Our work progresses but slowly as the question of money is so direfully great. We held a "rummage sale" lately and cleared $200 which has cheered us up very much, and we are prepared to make a great effort in the coming connection of our State clubs to increase the member of pupils for next year so we live in hope.
I must thank you also for your Report received not long ago, and read with much interest. With renewed thanks and best wishes I am Very sincerely yours

My dear Mrs Meleney!
To make quite sure of it – a write to say – that I will expect you on Friday, April 6 at one PM to take luncheon with me; & then we will have a good talk with each other. And in the afternoon – after our meal & talk – we will rest a while so as to be fresh for our meeting. Will this suit you?
I was very tired after a meeting last Saturday – & suffered somewhat in consequence on Sunday. Today I had to be alert from my class from 10 AM till 5 PM and now I am just good for nothing. Thanks for your letter and what Mr. Meleney said in regards to those of my girls who aspired to positions in vacation – Kindergartens & Play-grounds. I found today that two of my girls – Miss Lyon & Miss Webster – had called already on Mr. Meleney- last week. Miss Phillips is another most worthy girl - & also Miss Henderson. I have a splendid set of girls this year again. About Charleston – I am so sorry dear friend. I will enclose one of the circulars Mr. Shepherd sent to me. It is a regulation that like lectures can only be made – – or rather “read” in person. You would not confide your children and your institute work – – – for the time being – – – – to our dear efficient Anna Harvey? She spoke to me about it. Of course I do not want to talk you into anything you might regret afterwards– - The more so as Mr. Melaney will be compelled to remain in New York. I can understand all that well enough! As also your natural anxiety about your children – in particular your dear little flower Grace. We will talk about this on Friday!
Goodbye for to day!
With affectionate love yours

My dear Mrs Meleney,
And with all the burdens you have been loaded with- I bring “ another”,- hoping though- it may help to “ to lighten” a little. The young ladies who will help to “entertain”- there is- first of all- the “ Easter Song” by the class of 1903, to “ break the ice”
[page 2]
As it were. - After that- you- call upon the young ladies- as you best think fit. I here will only give the names and the “ pieces of music” they will deal with.
Our “pianists” are : Mrs. O'Brien, class 1903:-
“Alice”- by Asher and
“Valse”- by- —
Mrs Harriet darling Foster will play: “The Pilgrims Chorus” by Wegner.
[page 3]
Mrs Stevenson will sing
“The Swallows” - by Cowen
“The Maiden & the Butterfly- “-
Frances Kohler (my own girl)- will sig-
“Love Song”- by Flagier
“Mary Song”-
—-----
Then- if my invitation has been accepted- there will be Mrs Herman Behrens- a first class Pianist- not a Kgtner; and Mrs Pardy- a “fine singer” also not a kindergartener. Both- if we ask them-will
[page 4]
Surely play & sing for us. And if there should be more need for entertainment, I note the following names:-
Goldsmith- Piano
Sherman- Piano & Song
Foster- Song
McGovern- Piano
Birmingham- Piano
Tiemann- Piano
Swartwout- Piano
The girls are very talented; & it may be pleasing- to have some “music” going- on - whole “others converse”. I want to keep a “joyous”,- but also a “tempered” atmosphere. You know- what I mean.
[page 5]
I trust- all will pars- off nicely. We wanted to invite Mr Hughes daughter; I believe- finally an invitation was sent through Mr Hughes, I wish , we could have had Mrs Hughes also. I enclose cards- for “friends” you may deem interested- at this late hour. Hoping to surely see Mr Meleney- I am with much love- Your

My dear Mrs Meleney!
The hour of “weakness” was upon me - & you must forgive me for giving vent to it- when I looked into your loving eyes. I am so very alone-–& — – - where others find so much sympathy with those around them... I usually lock it up within myself; & then it happens one’s in a while – when meeting a “true Heart” that I “give-in”. Even though I have put up a little Easter- Hare nest for the Meleney family – – counting on your and Mr. meleney's native kindness and feeling of friendship for me not object to giving myself the pleasure of doing so; it gives me the delightful feeling as if I belonged a “wee bit” to you and yours! The little “fun” accompanied the same with-you will readily understand & leniently smile upon– I know. Please – do not open the box until Easter Sunday.
Even though I have written to Mr. Irwin Shepherd – secretary N.E.A. To tell of the prospect of having you at the Charleston Meeting. Please let me know at your earliest: how would you have termed the title of your address on the program? I am keeping very quiet in order to regain strength. Did you read the article on [illegible] that was in the “Sun” to day on N.Y. Kgtens–i.e. To day is Sunday & i commenced this letter yesterday the seventh. I can only write a little at a time. With love and greetings for a happy Easter-tide

My dear Mrs Meleney,
I have just returned, a few days ago, from the Summer School, NY University- where I have been living among the “ girl students” in the Gould Hall, & giving daily- during six weeks, 5days per week- two lectures! this did mean “ work”. However- I enjoyed it all very much. Meanwhile you have heard already about the Summer
[page 2]
School- thru Mrs Gertrude Conrsen- a charming young woman- when attended my lectures during one week. She was a visitor of the Misses Hall from Pittsburgh, Pd, who “captivated” my heart, & interested me highly. - I feel a “wee” but tired, and am resting here for a few days- preparatory to our “vacation - excursion” to Mars- when we intend to remain until end of September.
[page 3]
It is long- since I have heard from you,- end seems “ ages” since I have seen you! are you “ coming back” to New York or Brooklyn? or are you tempted- for “ the boys” sake to return to the northern regions? we miss you here greatly. You were needed at the JKU ! you do not realize what an important person you are,- & how far your influence “ goes out”! - Mr Meleney I have
[page 4]
Seen “all the year round’ only once, & that was Mar 4th at our Reception held in honor of the J.K.U.- There is much to be told! I almost had had in mind not to go to “Mars”,- but instead to send my straps to Cottage City; only- if I remember right- there is not Hotel. And- at the place where I stayed the last time - I could not make - up my mind to go to.- And
[page 6]
Anna Harvey? I saw her last- the night before we went to University Heights, when she was on of the important persons to “sign my testament & best well”.- I hope, she take a real good vacation, which she needs after her heavy work ,- and in preparation for “the work to come this Season. If I remember right, she spoke of going with Nellie Roethgen of Martha's Vineyard. And- may be: she
[page 7]
Carried - out her plan. Should she happen to be near you, - will you give “my dear love” to her ? Perhaps she may like to write a line to me? All letters I have addressed to Hotel San Remo; and - from time- to time I shall have the forwarded.- I can imagine, what an “ideal” life the Meleney family are living this Summer- as always. My loving greetings I send to all. - We are
[page 8]
Having [lovely[ cool days in New York; but - of course- this will not last.- Yesterday I had a short letter from Adriana Dorman - whose Mother’s Condition has not improved. Thi is very sad! As also dear Harriet Littig’s loss of her father. Harriet is very brave!- And now I will close this long apostle, hoping, it finds you all happy & well.

My dear Mrs Meleney,
My thoughts were often with you & yours, and I hope & trust, that your Summer passes in “Full happiness.- - Your letter pleased me much, & I thank you for the same.- Mine has been a very busy Summer, - though a restful- one. I hold, that “rest” does not consist in Laziness,- but in “change of work”. And in this spirit I had a most desirable Summer.- I was in Saratoga & spent a truly delightful time there. I met again a charming former pupil, who, conjointly with Miss Shackleford, daughter

I must tell you about this remarkable school when I see you next. Mrs Sands, my former pupil, says : “she learned it all from me”, - & that every-thing was based on my teachings”.- It touches me deeply. It makes me truly happy. Both ladies are lovely to me- and my heart goes out to their unselfish, beautiful [loving] work.- Saratoga was “at its- finest”,- I returned, because the arrangements had been made, that I was to move this week to the Hoffman Arms. - Yesterday - to my great disappointment, I learned, “that the

For- a boy arrived from Europe, containing some most interesting pictures- “family pictures.” It brings back “olden times”, - and I am happy over all the happiness that ever came to me during the past years. - I will not write again until “settled” in my “new home” - which may not be ere about the middle of September.- With love for the “united” Meleney- family, - I am - dear Carrie Cait- Affectionately You “Kgten Mother”

With Christmas, there comes accumulation of work- that the days “ apply”- and are not a quarter long enough.- Santa Claus send word, that he was going to send a “ crate” to your address containing “ fun” for the boys. Please, not to tell them ere Christmas. There may also come another small box- explaining itself. You know- Santa Claus is

Before Christmas always a very mysterious old fellow,- & we have to honor him.- I hope, you are doing well,- and baby too. Miss Curtis is the only person I have seen ( for a long while) from all my Brooklyn friends. Oh !the happiness shining from their faces.-
Of course, we shall be delighted to have you call some afternoon, as you say, - and also to meet Ms. Tappen .- The best of [illegible] ideas- as I read

About them,- or as our friend who hear her, & even attended her classes in Rome- are derived from Froebel. Her saying: if giving the children time “to think”, - has been compromised in Mr Kraus saying : “Make haste slowly”. Surely- Froebel- following Nature- allowed dur time for development & growth in all things! - It does me always good- when you say : “that you love to think of the days when I was in the midst of my children. It has been decided- altho’ I demonstrated - to have, at this late hour, some “report” in regard to the Charleston Meeting; and hence, you will have to join me in this, As I was President of the Kgten Dept N.E.A., I have arranged already, for me to “give report of the two session; and it would add the interesting [e’tans], if

If you were to give a short report of your impressions on some characteristic points of the inhalants, of Charleston, &c - You know, as this Meeting will be in “liue” of our Christmas Meeting, it has been given in “my charge”, and I want to make it partly a “social” meeting with “informal Luncheon”. Last year- I had that too; but - counting only on our members, & almost

Everyday bringing one or too friends,- we “felt that” & some of us had no luncheon. It was most mortifying. Now, we thought it all- over, and decided to print on the cards : “for member only”, - R.S.V.P., so that plenty of Luncheon might be provided. They felt it to me, to invite “extra” guests, - which I am going to do. Mr Meleney will be one of them.-

My dearest Mrs Meleney,
This morning we had our Christmas tree in Training class. It was such a happy morning. I love the girls; and. To watch their development- is highly interesting. I always have the woman in the them- in mind; and not the “teacher”. I know, that my conception
[page 2]
Of doing this- was in Gorebel’s mind- all the while. Sometimes this “hard work”;- hardle- than - were I top think only of their future Public School examinations.- But- I did not want to write about this. Pardon me- my “pen” & my thoughts- were running off together.- We have just packed a few remembrances for you & yours.
[page 3]
These are “modest gifts”, - but given with a heart full of love for you - my dear Kindergarten daughter, and your children. I wrote to Mr Meleney- to ask for your address, which I had mislaid; but found it- & am sorry to have troubled him. May your Christmas by a merry and happy-one to you all; and the coming new year- one of blessing
[page 4]
My thoughts are so often with you, - and I should be so glad, to hear from you, and about your life- up there in the “colder” regions”. I imagine, it must be- like in my old home. Cold- being- Ice & snow!.- I have been very busy; and there were so many “obstacles” to overcome, this year, - here at the Hotel; and I had to abstain- seeing my frends about me- as was my pleasure in former years. Some old Mr Brennan

Did- things are sadly changed; and often the thought comes: “would it not be better for me- to go away from the Hotel San remo- to find a place - where to live in a more peaceful way? I caught a very bad cold in November- owing to having not sufficient heat in my apartment. This has been remedied- by having a second Radiator
[page 6]
Put-in. The rooms are warm now, & that is one comfort.- We have had very full & pleasant meetings in our Ass’n. I gave the lectures during these past three months. Next month, January will be our social meetings. I wonder, if Mr Meleney- as one of our “Honorary Members” could not spare a few minutes to “look- in”? And see the happy crowd of girls.- And in February - we shall have
[page 7]
A lecturer on “Mimic”; and in March- Dr McVonnel of Teachers College will lecture ; and in April- probably Mr John Fretwell, who is such a stanch advocate of Froebel. - Miss Hallagher is again the Chairman of our Committee; and Harriet Littig is “a very treasure”. - Mrs Kennedy lost her mother- lately. Thus is life- sad & happy!- My Emma is developing wonderfully; she is quite a help to me- in “class”- for she is intelligent- & skillful with her hand,- & a good marriage. She hold you & Leber George in great affection
[page 8]
I hope, that my package will reach you “in time” for Christmas day. I tried hard, to send it off before; but- the days were not long enough for all I had to do,- and it usually was one to two hours after midnight- ere I could retire. And & A.M. I am “up “ again.- I hope - you feel well, dear Carrie Cait. If thoughts & “good wishes” could help you- you would be in “blooming health”. Adieu! My Love & good wishes to all. Sessions will last three days. - Mrs Blow will also be here.- Adieu!. “Blessing” be yours and also to your family.- I am glad to know, that the J.K.U. have reinstalled you in the place belonging to you, & the committee you created. Love to all! I am so glad, you & Mr Meleney are coming Wednesday.

My dear mrs Meleney,
Your letter from this A.M. has just reached me. I was absent- when the boys called with the “ Horn of Plenty” in shape of that fine basket with fruit. When I returned- it was found in “ fine condition”, I thank you & Mr Meleney & the “ family entire” so much! you have done too much, do. Mr Meleney’s kind note
[page 2]
I enjoyed exceedingly; it was a beautiful letter- and as such “ a Christmas gift” and itself. I thank him for the same. I am happy- with you- that George Leber is well again.- I write to say : that- to-morrow A.M. I am “ going off” again. I cannot find quite the rest- here- I ought to have. I intend remaining away- until Sunday. Monday my work recommence has. It is pretty “ Sharp” work this
[page 3]
Winter, - but I enjoy it so much ! Every year- it seems- I love my work letter.- Miss Mary Jean Miller- a rarely “gifted” woman, - grad: of 3 other Train: classes,- a “teacher”, - and a Kgtner of 9yrs experience, - a literary woman, - & a “leader” in many ways- has given- up every thing- to spend the Winter in my “classes”- both- Training class and Extension Course. I am delighted to have her with them . She says,n that now only she begins to know what Kgten “means”
[page 4]
Mrs Putnam spent a morning with us; she told “my girls”, - that - coming to see me- was kind of a “Mecca” to her. Ada Mareen Hughes also was here; and also the Training Teacher from Quebec Normal Tr: Sch: and who declared: “She must take a years’s “leave of absence”- in order to come to me & join my classes.-
This is good to hear; it does my heart good! And you will be pleased, I know. I wish, I could see Mr Maxwell- & heave him see “my class”- Mr Meleney passed me in the Street- the other day; I called -out, - but he was absorbed in “thought”, - & then I did not bother him.- I wish you all a most happy “New Year”, - with no sickness-

All those very tired after yesterday's exertion, I cannot abstain from writing to you- to, your” good wishes” and the lovely “ why- flower” book given to me by yourself and your husband. you have done “ too much” thank you- both-
[page 2]
Ever so much. I was delighted to see Mr Meleney; it was “good” to see him.- but I was sorry, that you were not present at the “ opening” of, to hear the charming “ address” give by Rev. Dr. Sill, - our “Chaplain” now. We had a “godly” assemblage- in spite of the ridiculous
[page 3]
Rumor: “That we had cases of smallpox at our hotel”.- I wrote to the” Board of Health” and received a letter from Dr. [Blamelh] himself - ( the “ head” of that department) saying “ that no cases have been nor ever were at our hotel,- & no report or record of any such case was assistant”. I- too- had a lovely photograph of “ Saint Michaels” from Charleston.- And

Now let me wish you & yours “ Heaven's blessings” for the new century, my dear mrs. Meleney. Mets “ happiness” feel your heart & you're home, is my prayer and sincere wish.-

My dear Mrs. meleney,
You are always so very thoughtful in writing to me,-& I am- apparently- so little appreciative of your kind thought of me; but let me assure you,-your letters are just like “shining stars among the many letters I receive. The days are too short, to do all “I ought to do”; & hence you have, please, to be lenient with me, & offer take my - cover
[page 2]
“good will” for the deed.-I hope, your little give is quite well again. I know, your heart is “full” all the time- aside of the “needs & necessities” for the entire family. It is so difficult to avoid getting a cold these days.- I always wanted to ask you. “Would your brother, Dr. [Cait], ever have the time to give us a lecture on “points of health” for the kindergarten & little children under 8 years of age? I believe- that is his specialty?- Please,
[page 3]
Excuse this question,& regard it as “nothing”, if out of place. I am greedy for the members of the Association-I have re-read Mrs.[Bertt’s]letter,- & overlooked at the time, that she said. “Later on in the Season she would give us a lecture.- Please, bear these points in mind for our ”Meeting” on Tuesday. Of course, I shall be willing & do anything I can, if the Committee says so. I have had quite a “holiday” by not speaking of our last delightful Meeting, and to have only a very short-2o minutes-talk on Dec 18th.
[page 4]
It being our December meeting i.e. the Christmas Meeting, I also have a little fun in store for the members.-Thinking it all over, I believe, it may be best not to have an “open meeting’ on the 18th,-for two reasons, [viz]:
Because of the [Darraeh] who [so not] word “that he did not like it to be the public for various reasons; and that he had made this offer solely for me”.
Because of “the fun” I am going to have.-It would all give the wrong impression of our Alumni work to outsiders. Don’t you think so too?- Our January meeting could be a public, or “open” one.
And what do you think of my idea: Would it be well if
[Page 5]
if I were to write: the heads of prominent Kgten workers; for [inst]: Mrs F [Carlei] & Mrs. wakerman,&- who else? In Brooklyn; and Mrs. Dozier, Mrs.--- from the Teacher College Mrs. Haven, Mrs [Hancher],Mrs [Harris] & c. whoever we ^i.e. The Committee may decide upon, If I said: I to write them,- this was said merely: to hold out my hand, & show, that I, the “much abused Mrs. Kraus” is broad enough for the occasion. I see-your smile! Tell me frankly-am I right-or wrong? I am “teachable”.
Dear Mrs Meleney, your de-lightful account about your “family Ktgen” will not leave my mind. What a fine Kindergarten & true Mother you are!
[page 6]
Thank you, for “ending-up” The interesting educative account of the “broker dream” You should write this up, as an article, and send it to the “Kgten Review”- Anna Harvey visited any class last Wednesday and brought her Class. I had invited them for any final lecture on the II Gift. We had a lovely Afternoon. She has such nice girls in her Class- Are you ever in the City on a Monday or Wednesday at about 11 AM? And would you like to look in “on any class?- or in the Afternoon of either days?- I hope, I have not tired you with my long letter.

My dearest Mrs Meleney
Your letter received. I am so grieved to hear of dear little Grace’s illness. Pneumonia ! May our Father in heaven hear our prayers, & grant her re-covery speedily! You dear Mother ! what an anxiety for you! First the dear sister,- and now the loved child! Of course, she need you lovely
[page 2]
Every moment,- she is your first thought and your first loving duty!- You have proved your interest in the work of our Association,- & no one thinks, you should be else-where than with the loved little daughter. Do not make yourself uneasy about it, [put] for a single moment.- Of course, are could not help but miss you & your beautiful “balance” standing always as a
[page 3]
“Modifier”. What shall we do, when your three years are up?- I am so glad, that Grace is improving, and that the dear sister is gaining strength slowly. This letter will go “with a heart full of love” and the hope, that your hearts or glad again in the assured hope of all danger being past & gone! - Our meeting- to-day- passed off all right. Bessie Demarest was in the Chair; she will be Chairman on Dec 30th, The future Meeting will be again at Hotel San Remo, [Mujso] Brennan & Gale having offered lower rates. And
[page 4]
And we can have a Committee room without further expense to the Association. The larg[e] Hall will cost $8.00. And as we pay but $6,00 at the Tuxedo,- the difference will be only $2,00.- Rose Nathan reported, & a letter from Miss Darrah was read - & it was decided to spend the $50,00 not on the [Hewrella 7th]” but at the new place on the east Side [where] Miss D. is about to open; & put our interest in a “special” room there.- Miss Luey Wheelock had written to me, asking me to attend their Kg: Meeting in Boston on April 21st, Froebel’s Birthday. I had to decline the honor (they wanted to give me a reception) because my strength would not have endured it – the meeting of the J.K.U. being on the 18,19 & 20th of April- Miss Wheelock wrote
[margin]
On the occasion when Miss Blow was first to have lectured, Miss Wheelock also was on the program,- don’t you remember ?
[page 5]
Sand-table & second Gift & I left, I needed the next of the Christmas week, when I shall leave the City. I am working hard,- & must seek rest- if I shall pull safely through the Winter. - I talked this over with Adriana some time ago; and she is so true & clear sighted- quiet so she is. I have been thinking over what would be done; and Miss Dorman proposed that Dr Franklin Smith might be willing to give [no] the lecture on hygiene &c. We thought it well, that she would inquire lecture our “Meeting of the Ex Com.” whether he would be willing to do this for us; and she went to his house to ask him, whether he would speak on “Ventilation of the
[page 6]
Kg: room, & how to detect symptoms of contagious disease, how to prevent contagion, &c.- I thought, these subject would be “all-important”- ones for the members of our Association. But- I am sorry to say- I met with some “opposition” and it was said, that, “if we had Miss Wheelock, it would be impolite to have some- one else”.- I upheld, that two speakers were often on the program. Two years ago we had Mrs Hughes and myself. - Then : Mr Darrah and myself; But it was maintained that Miss Darrah was also to address the Association, although it is understood that she would speak only for about 10 minutes, to tell about her work in which we have become so interested. All this is very awkward in regard to Dr Smith: It has been decided, that if Miss Wheelock declines to give us an
[page 7]
Address- the subject of which she could choose herself, then Dr Smith would be asked. I do not think this quite right - as- both : Miss Wheelock & Dr Smith could have said these say- without loading our Meeting. Well- I abide- but - “hold my own”,- I will write to Mrs Dorman & “put it in as will a form as I possibly can”. - I have written all this, thinking it is better, that you should know what we did.- Anna Harvey said, that Isabel Peckham Pashley wished to be again Committee member. I said: she should wait a while, as she wrote to me “how her young baby boy absorbed all of her free time. We had to discuss about a substitute for Mrs Collins.- Later- if Mrs Pashley really feel, that she can [conscientiously] take her place with us, we shall be pleased, I am sure, to have her take the place of one of our precious [not it droves] when they leave in May
[page 8]
That she would be in New York on December 20th and remain until Dec 30th There upon I wrote, that our Meeting was to be on the 30th of Dec: and that I hoped she could remain & attend the same. She answered “that she should be very happy to do so, &c. - Now, I hope brought the before an Committee, and Miss Wheelock will be involved to “address” our Association choose her own subject. We shall have to await her answer.- I have told the Com: that I wished not to speak on Dec: 30th, They had talked about the [land]
[margin]
Don’t you think that will be best Goodbye, dear young friend. If not too much trouble, let me hear, how Gracy is, & also the dear sister.- [illegible] to got to Bklyn to night to hear Anna Harvey speak about my “Sewing without a needle”. But I caught a bad cold- & the Meeting tired me greatly; so I was obliged to “give-up”.- With loving affection yours

My dear Mrs Meleney,
Truly sorry I am, that your strength has not returned so speedily as you hoped. However- you are growing stronger-& that is a blessing. Last year- I passed through similar struggles. The love for “ my work” helped to make me strong again; and- the love for your family- well make you strong again! think of it! what a great work you have done- & are doing- in bringing up to manhood those dine sturdy, intelligent boys- & your Gracie to a realization of “true Womanhood”. - Pray- save your strength - & do not force anything- by coming to our next Saturday’s meeting. Of course

I wrote to you- right after your return to Brooklyn, & hope you received that letter

We should be delighted to see you! But - not at a particle of your precious health & strength.- I have promised- to address our Association; but - I shall address them again- in mid - winter or towards Spring; and - what I have to say- is all meant towards a better knowledge of Froebel , & a strengthening of the true Kgten principles. Thus is the only may- I can come in contact with my dear former pupils.- I am busy with a class of bright young women.- No- we are not yest at our xmas preparation . We have too much other important work to do , I & my loved daughter are “happy” in our united work- & sweet intercourse. We often speak of you & yours.- May “blessings always be hovering over you and your’s - is my sincere wish - in which my Emma joins.

Disappointment not to see you here & have you “in line” with Mrs Hughes & the other beloved “daughters”- in the spirit of Froebel! I am truly grieved, - & am looking anxiously forward to hearing from a member of your family how you are?- The Reception was a grand success. The Committee had done “wonders”. The pleasure great- to see so many of our

Graduates and friends. It seems, as if my heart within me-wa actually “enlarging”; & it burst upon me- all of a sudden- what “happiness” my whole life had held! God bless them all - the earnest, loveable, fine women- young and old! The “devotion” personified in them- for the Course of Childhood- within Friebel’s beautiful “nature-laws”. And I feel so truly grateful- that I have been permitted to be be the “month- piece” of Froebel’s thought, - of his philosophy & practical “working- out” of his ideas!-
[page 4]
Friday evening, December 10th.- It was impossible for me- to send this letter earlier. Dear friends- came & went- & kept me quite busy. - Anna Harvey was “delightful”. So were “others”. All that was said- I placed it in the “Altar of Froebel” - to when it was all “due” ,- as also Mr Kraus, to Fran Froebel, Dr Wichard Lange, From Rouge- to my little Kgten children, the Mothers, - & my adult Tr: class pupils; I learned from all, and only thus I developed & grew. I am thankful- to feel so vigorous & young; am so happy “to be at work- as usual.- I was glad to shake hands with dear Mr Meleney. Many of my- now grown-up- Kg: children were present.- My dear love I send to you & pray, that you may soon be well again.- Affectionately Yours-

going out you & yours ; and I do hope , that painful [Sciatca] has left you, - & that you can enjoy life once more. - Also, that your children are well. - I suppose, you will not be able to attend Mrs Harvey’s lecture- next Saturday, - Mrs Peet will give us the next lecture in March; and Mrs Orr the following - one

In April. I am so glad that Members of our Ass’n will do this ; for - among them - we have considerable talent & much ability. We missed you this Winter- at our Meetings; and next Season. My dearest Mrs Meleney,
Such glorious accounts have reached me- about the delightful & helpful lecture you have given to our alumni association. I suppose- you could not let me have a copy of the list of picture books & other books- given to the Ass’n? I deeply regret, that I could not have been present, but - I did not know
[page 2]
How to manage- as the tickets were in my possession for weeks already!- I think, the pre-arranged & announced, that we know beforehand.- Almost all of my students were present. They are a very interesting “ set” a girls. The three girls- who were “ voted in” for members, received today their Diploma. They are- all three very intelligent & lovely girls,- & have taken hold of Froebel’s Methods - prove & true- in a delightful & encouraging way.
[page 3]
When the weather turns to be fairer, I hope- that we may arrange to see each other.- I am well- & as active as ever,- Nay even more active. My work is my joy! and- the freedom that has been mine- all my life long- has made me so strong in it,- I believe. Many things I do, or “ hold on to” make clash with the “ school regime” but never with Froebel.
[page 4]
Your boys- in College & School- as also your sweet daughter- are a source of joy & happiness to you & Mr Meleney ! You (both of you)- have tell me about them, is of great interests to me, - & always will be. - Adieu- for to day! With dearest love- & good wishes for the happiness & well - being of the Meleney - family- Yours
Maria Kraus Boelte.
