I did not realize what a very serious time you were having, and was glad indeed to know that little Gracie is out of danger.
As my friends did not go to [Nachington] I remained here a little linger, came back froma visit at Greenwich, N.J. yesterdays after

Noon. I feel that I have been quite a little of public school work. As the schools in Jersey City are in person this week I had a chance to see two of them, including the Training School.
What I have seen has only deepened my connection of the need of an entire change in the character of the work in the first years of school life.
I have met some my pleasant people and had some very interesting lakes with principals and training teachers.
Do you know that- that dreadful custom of mixing the children’s

I thought of stopping at the Board of Education yesterday to inquire how the children are getting on the remembered it- was vacation, and thought [mobably] I should not find Mr Meleney then. I spent- such a lovely morning with Mrs. Kraus last Tuesday. But the class was too large to made it seem like old times.

The closing exercises of my class will be Friday, June 13th at 3 p.m.,- at the large Hall, Tuxedo Building- opposite the “ Hoffman Arms”. I write to say : Won't you and Mr. Meleney come- to give us your blessing- by your presence? Our exercises are not “ stately”.- quiet “ entrenous”- but very pretty music. And my graduating class have invited Mrs Harvey's “ class”- in loving courtesy to the “ Happy Day” spent at the “ Adelphi:”.- Perhaps you would like to bring Grace & one of your boys? My dear Mrs Meleney,
I said yesterday, that I was going to send you a “formal” invitation to give me the pleasure of dining with me on Thursday, January 18th, - & here I am about writing an informal letter,- which seems so much more natural between you & me. - Will you come, & be here at a quarter before six P.M.? Of course- you will - if all
[page 2]
All is ”well” in your family- no “sore throats”, & c. - Good wishes for the little sufferer.- Dear Mrs Meleney, I feel “dreadful” about Dr Cait, & that my action in regard to Dr Smith may looked upon as a “slight” or a “[renderer]” But- really- I thought, - & was led to think last Winter- that he was perfectly willing to favor our Alumni- but that he was two busy a man- & would therefore rather not- until more
[page 3]
At leisure, & as me never heard anything any more in regard to this, I concluded is to be an impoliteness to “better” him or you again,- but to abide our time- & his convenience. And - as I felt - at Christmas (as at first designed- & expected of me) that I was to be the speaker- & not at all feeling well enough for that I ask- I wanted Dr Smith to substitute me, and at the same time filling the need of such a lecture. - Then- you know- how my plans were frustrated, and
[page 4]
And - having committed myself- I wanted Dr Smith now- for our Jan: Meeting.- Yesterday- I was a sick woman,- had the first bad head-ache- since my illness 3 yrs ago, - & that was the reason I was so “not myself,- & also occupied the big arm-chair - feeling - as if I needed its “support”. I had to conquer so many difficulties here at the Hotel- yesterday A.M.- feel depressed, because of the dangerous condition my eldest and only [servicing] sister is in. And then-[node] Froabel’s death re-vived so many old memories. All this- together with my bodily weakness - made me “unfit” for our meeting- & I could not act as - in my usual strength. And
[page 5]
And this- also - led me to say: that I would not attend anymore the Ex. Com: Meetings- I really felt actually weak. The A.M. I feel better, - & hope- in the proper condition for this afternoon !- I am not going to make a “free” speech - as “the others” are probably going to do. Free speaking always includes a little “looseness” -& I think - considering all the active Kgtners - the thing is of too serious a kind. And hence I have jotted down the “[summa summaresse]” of Froebel’s view of the Gifts- [tinged]
[page 6]
With my interpretation. And this I will be sure- that I do not say too hard things,- and do not dwell too long upon one point- at the hurt of another point. Mr Kraus taught one this. I am going to have only 15 minutes, - & little can he said in that time; but- I am apart- I shall need just 20 minutes- & if they “stop” me after 15 minutes- some points will have to be “left out”. - Some day I must tell you about Mrs [Heernart’s] letter. I shall be a “member”

“In dead” of that great German Kg: [Union] here-after, - in spirit I always have been with them.- It does me good- that I can speak thus [unreservedly] to you, my loved Kgten daughter- feeling- I shall be “understood”.-

My dear Mrs Meleney,-
Here I am- among trunks & box & packed- all “ ready to move”, - and yet - unable to move. The apartment is not ready. the Workman are yet busy! It appears, - they ought to have commenced two months ago,- or rather “ sooner”. And now they have to hurry- which is not a wise thing in such a case. Of course- my “ lease” here is up before October the first; but- I part at the Hoffman Arms for the month of September, - in order to be settled- & read for my Winter’s work. - This all is very awkward for me ; but- no - one can swim against the stream. - over
[page 2]
Your letter was “ good to read”. You & Mr Meleney are “ wise parents”. you well “ read” the fruit of your dealings and judicious treatment with your children. My heart just “ goes out” to you - at present- - more than “ ever before”. May be, that the remembrance at long ago- draws me to you. God be with you, darest!- I never hear from Charleston now.- in the September Member of the Kg: Magazine I red, that the choice of President- Kgten Dpt N.E.A has been a “ good one” Miss O’Grady, Teacher’s College. And further,- that Dr Hall presided at the United child- close & Kgten Meeting- the first,- and that there was an “ animated decision”.

Miss Holmes gave a “good” address. It appears, that I made after all no mistake and having her for “President” this year; it brought about- what I had aimed- at- a connection with the South, arousing and interest for the earnest work being done there. - And further- she had also a “Parents-day”- out growth of what I commenced in Charleston.- I am happy about it. - Dear Mrs Meleney, - I do not expect any answer from you. Only one thing I would long to know, namely: when do you expect the “Advent” to take place? I want to be the are you these days- with loving- & prayer. - “My love” to the Meleney family! My Dear Mrs Meleney,
Pardon delay in answering your last “good” letter, and not responding [ere] this in sending the news-paper clipping about Dr Hall’s Session. You will find it in the enclosed- as you handed it to me. Even now I have read it !- Much that Dr hall has said, is true. Mr Kraus & I often discussed these points. We must, however, be careful in dealing with them. Some time during the year, we may take this up [aid] one of our meetings!- I will refrain from [illegible] now. Mrs. Wheelock struck some “good points”, but has not been quite [forcible] enough.
[page 2]
The [best] persons taking up such “discussions] are necessarily in the dis-advantage. Discussions should include “a thorough knowledge of that which is to be discussed”-it as too important. Dr Hall is a “curiousness”. He, certainly shows, that he read [Froebel]; but what he said, shows also “that he read others”, who -years ago- in Germany- brought up [sincere] points; but - like a move- vanished .---
More [anon] about this !it is too [hot] to be “scientific”, and my “restful holy day is not yet quiet over. I shall leave again, to return about the 17th of September; and then I shall be very busy with preparations of Class, interviews, and my removal to “higher regions” in our Hotel. Oct : 5th I shall resume my work. And after the [sundale] of October I shall be at home again for my friends on
[page 3]
On Saturday mornings.-
I had a delightful, quiet & restful time at Narragansett Pier. Even Miss Sciepstein I saw but little, her house being “renovated”, her presence “at home” was needed.
There were some delightful people at the Inn, & among them, my dear young friends ! Mr & Mrs Comstock and little Johnathan. I found a “kind of Mr. Taylor” at the Pier, and had daily “drives all over the county”- I had my “Salt water baths” while I left, and looked “sun-burnt” & in general good condition, when I left a week ago.-
What a summer experience I had this year ! almost too much-including the excitement in June, the week in Washington, D.C.
[page 4]
Martha’s Vineyard, and Narr-gansett Pier. All in all, it has done me good, has tended to “rouse me” completely to my former independence-which some of my former [pinpoints]- in their loving endeavor- would almost “[crowd-out]”.- I am ready for the Fall “campagne” “Class”, “[Alumni]”, “Meetings,” and whatever else may turn up. I have a “charming” remembrance of my Martha’s Vineyard experience, - & shall entertain it always ‘. - Goodbye, and love to all !
Tell the boys, that the Bird’s Nest I brought safely home, - as also the pretty little [up & saucer] you gave me. - I trust, Grace is “hale & well” by this time.-
Pardon the [serawl]! I am [writing] on my lap.

Yesterday- in Mr Meleney’s welcome letter- I hear, that you are not very well. I am very, very sorry I am sorry to hear this; for I had hoped, that you would return from your Summer’s “outing” strong and well. - It was impossible for me- to write before; for - the “moving” too all my strength.

And then the “fixing”, and “getting-ready” for the Winter’s work. - I would to write about our beloved Emma Newman. I had a letter from her friend- Mrs Mary Hall- of Spencer, N.Y. who traveled with Emma & her father in Nova Scotia. She been to “fail suddenly”- and the morning of the fatal day- she was removed to the Hospital at Halifax; but - passed away- in the evening. The Doctor said, that she must have suffered for about two years of
[page 3]
Diabetes, - & that she could not have lived. It is too sad! I am truly grieving for her. - And I am so thankful- that she could be with us last Winter! And have the gifted young woman with us- in all her sweetness & goodness- for which God must have loved her- that He needed her. - Blessed be her memory- & the influence she enacted. We shall never forget her; for she will be a “living” memory to us- always.- Yesterday- we missed you at our first Alumni Exec: Com. Meeting. Your letter was read:- “that you would be with us- at our first

Alumni meeting- this Season, - & be our Chairman. This pleases me greatly, - for- I have - “reluctantly”- assented to give the lecture on that day. - What do you think- of our “Kraus graduate- luncheon”? About 200 will be assembled. It was a great task- to find all the names * addresses; so many have married; many have died; and a large number - have never reported - all these years!- I hope- our’s will be a happy “re-union”. - My thoughts go- with much anxiety- to the appointments of the Training teachers in Manhattan & B’klyn- that the right person may be found. Miss Harvey & Mrs Miller would be fine representations- standing up for the truth & “genuine” work.-
I hope- this may find you in better health, - & as happy as you deserve - in your delightful “Family wish”. My love- I send to all. Affectionately yours

My dearest Mrs Meleney,
Weeks have gone by- & I have not written to you! - After my “Summer’s work” was completed, - I grew so lazy - that it because an effort to hold a pen in my hand. I rarely enjoyed a vacation - in pure restfulness- so much at the Summer. If I were to begin to tell you of all my lovely experiences- widening my heart,
[page 2]
And extending “my views”- I would had to write you a Volume. I am truly glad of the Summer’s experience. My work at the University - though taxing my strength - were a real pleasure to me. Dr. Merrill - who came “out” to visit us one day - called my “class” the Banner class - as it was the largest at the University. Dr McCracken was not present; he & Mrs
[page 3]
McCracken were suddenly called - away to Bairet, where their youngest son was very ill with Typhoid fever. They are all home now, I believe. Many of the wives of the Professors became very much interested. It is lovely at University Heights. Such beautiful drives. I lived at a very nice boarding house, & made some lovely acquaintances. There were students from almost all over the Union. Four Training School teachers attended my lectures- & I made
[page 4]
Warm friends with them. And - if only you could have witnessed the feeling of all - against the “Program - work”! It would have done your heart good.- The enclosed Circular will tell you of one branch of my “Winter work”. If you have to give me any advice - do so, - it will be grateful received.- Though Anna Harvey & Miss Roethgen I heard a little of your life at Martha’s Vineyard. I suppose - you are still there - with Grace & George Lieber. I hope that this year I may see the little “resting”.
[page 5]
The boys are growing- I will hardly know them - when seeing them. I hope - they are all well now. I send my love & good wishes to the “family entire”. - Mr Meleney is kept very busy - as I see by the accounts of the Papers - of the tremendous work done in our Public Schools. - I have only just come home. Tomorrow we begin house - cleaning; & Tuesday my first

appointments are made for “interviews”. Did you hear of it - Miss Tompkins, Kraus graduates, who was in Cuba - as you may remember - has received the appointment of Kg: Training teacher in a Normal Sch: in Long Island. - Also I hear, that Dr. Poland, Supt: of Newark, is much in favor of the “Kraus graduates” It is for the Cause - that I am so glad of it!-
[page 7]
And now - “adieu” dear Mrs Meleney. - Annette Nolte from the West, & Joh: Schmidt - from your “class” - both - were at the University hearing my lectures. Miss Nolte has a very fine position in Chicago.-
With love - Yours always

Have to “support” me - that I shall not be “weighed down” again by over-work.- My strength from since “before my illness” seems to have returned to me “Mother Nature” has been good to me !- I grew stronger- the moment my Maid had been sent away. I have emancipated myself from “being cared for”, and accepted again the standpoint I always held up to Mr Kraus death: to help others.” I am so glad that no-one is there to “hold my elbow” when I walk the Stairs,- or

“pick - up” things- should I drop the, [&c.&c.] with “my daughters” by my side & back of me- I feel - like a General with a fine [Army] !
