“Welcome home” !
My dear Mrs Meleney,
Your letter from August 14th reached me- and I hope, you do not think ill of me because I left the same unanswered. I was so truly in need of rest, - “that I let every-thing go”, - and I do it well! for - here I am- hale & well- yes- looking forward to my Winter’s work- - & am Alumni,- & my dear, loved “daughter to see them again- makes my heart beat with joy.
[page 2]
I shall be settled, I think, by September 16th, - and have [mad] several appointments for the future “Class” had opened. - While I think of it: you gave my Address to a Mrs Katherine Von Zant - [Blakenburg N.J.] This lady “wants to assist”, - & I cannot see how- while she has to learn ?- Please, let me know about her.-
Of course, you are
[page 3]
At home by this time, as the Public Schools are commencing to-day. What a delightful time you must have had at the Vineyard. I congratulate you upon the successful work you did there- Better late- than never - my dear Kglen daughter. Will you accept my good, my very best wishes toward happiness for this new year commencing for you on August 12th. May Heaven blessings be with you & yours, is my heartfelt wish
[page 4]
And prayer. What a happy family you are,- blessed- indeed!- I have no birthday Gift for you; - but- did not Anna Harvey tell you “about the ring? It is all ready for you- in my bureau.- Yes, I met Miss Ogilly’s mother- Mrs Warner- one day; - she seemed a charming, cultured women.-
I saw Miss [Dresser]- my delegate to Los Angeles, & who was “recognized” as such - as Mr Irwin Shepard wrote to me, expressing his pleasure, that I would

Do so.- Of course, it was a great experience to me, but I think it was well that I made this sacrifice. Mrs Dr: had her eyes open,- & brought home many interesting facts. Also Mrs Fannie David was there- meeting many of the great [Educators] & - visiting Kgtens, And- Mrs Gashwiler & her daughter Marie, were there. Mrs G wrote to me lately all about it. I will “collect” all these items, - & then we will read them some

Day- my “stanch one”, and I - & consult what should be brought forward- & what not, For - me have to be a little careful. I sent word to Miss Lawson & though Mrs dresser, “that they should leave me out;- but- they appointed one without as much as “asking my pleasure.” - I earnest say. That I am pleased or elated about it. However- now- that it has again become my duty- I shall, of course, be deeply interested in it, & try to do the best I can. And “my daughters” will
[page 7]
Have to “support” me - that I shall not be “weighed down” again by over-work.- My strength from since “before my illness” seems to have returned to me “Mother Nature” has been good to me !- I grew stronger- the moment my Maid had been sent away. I have emancipated myself from “being cared for”, and accepted again the standpoint I always held up to Mr Kraus death: to help others.” I am so glad that no-one is there to “hold my elbow” when I walk the Stairs,- or
[page 8]
“pick - up” things- should I drop the, [&c.&c.] with “my daughters” by my side & back of me- I feel - like a General with a fine [Army] ! What precious girls we have among our Association.- Dear Carrie Cait- we must make our Meetings over more open for “others”, be ever, ore helpful-& ready for improvement We must be- at our Ex. Com: Meetings- ever more “business- like; and at the Meetings no one should be allowed to have more that 5 minutes for reports[u].- And now I will close- or I write & write- and my letter might grow to be 100 pages. Love to all Members of your dear family.- Affectionately yours
