My dearest Mrs Meleney,
You may have heard already the “sad news”. My heart “aches”- that our loved Emma Newman should have gone from us ! Why- oh! Why must this be? We ask in our ignorance. Yet- God knows best, - knows why he “called her home”!

I was so happy - in the thought- that Emma Newman was to be the “chosen” Training teacher for our Public School Train: Class.- Emma Newman - & Anna Harvey- or Mary Jean Miller ! But- it appears- non of these three precious women is to be appointed.- I have not yet heard about the cause of Emma’s

Sudden death! She - “our Lily”; so well prepared for the work!- I have almost completed my removal from the Hoffman Arms- back to my “olf abode”- the Hotel San Remo. And- in a few days- my vacation with commence.I shall be home about the 18th of September. My work begins the 4th of October.- I will

Close this letter; I felt - as if I must come to you in my grief about Emma,- & send you “my sympathy”; for you too- loved her.-
