My dear Mrs Meleney,
The closing exercises of my class will be Friday, June 13th at 3 p.m.,- at the large Hall, Tuxedo Building- opposite the “ Hoffman Arms”. I write to say : Won't you and Mr. Meleney come- to give us your blessing- by your presence? Our exercises are not “ stately”.- quiet “ entrenous”- but very pretty music. And my graduating class have invited Mrs Harvey's “ class”- in loving courtesy to the “ Happy Day” spent at the “ Adelphi:”.- Perhaps you would like to bring Grace & one of your boys? I thank you & Mr. Meleney for the

pardon this informal invitation; the “ waves” are going high here.- It is nearly 2 a.m., & - I will hasten to take my much needed “ night's rest”.-

My dear Mrs Meleney,
I said yesterday, that I was going to send you a “formal” invitation to give me the pleasure of dining with me on Thursday, January 18th, - & here I am about writing an informal letter,- which seems so much more natural between you & me. - Will you come, & be here at a quarter before six P.M.? Of course- you will - if all
[page 2]
All is ”well” in your family- no “sore throats”, & c. - Good wishes for the little sufferer.- Dear Mrs Meleney, I feel “dreadful” about Dr Cait, & that my action in regard to Dr Smith may looked upon as a “slight” or a “[renderer]” But- really- I thought, - & was led to think last Winter- that he was perfectly willing to favor our Alumni- but that he was two busy a man- & would therefore rather not- until more
[page 3]
At leisure, & as me never heard anything any more in regard to this, I concluded is to be an impoliteness to “better” him or you again,- but to abide our time- & his convenience. And - as I felt - at Christmas (as at first designed- & expected of me) that I was to be the speaker- & not at all feeling well enough for that I ask- I wanted Dr Smith to substitute me, and at the same time filling the need of such a lecture. - Then- you know- how my plans were frustrated, and
[page 4]
And - having committed myself- I wanted Dr Smith now- for our Jan: Meeting.- Yesterday- I was a sick woman,- had the first bad head-ache- since my illness 3 yrs ago, - & that was the reason I was so “not myself,- & also occupied the big arm-chair - feeling - as if I needed its “support”. I had to conquer so many difficulties here at the Hotel- yesterday A.M.- feel depressed, because of the dangerous condition my eldest and only [servicing] sister is in. And then-[node] Froabel’s death re-vived so many old memories. All this- together with my bodily weakness - made me “unfit” for our meeting- & I could not act as - in my usual strength. And
[page 5]
And this- also - led me to say: that I would not attend anymore the Ex. Com: Meetings- I really felt actually weak. The A.M. I feel better, - & hope- in the proper condition for this afternoon !- I am not going to make a “free” speech - as “the others” are probably going to do. Free speaking always includes a little “looseness” -& I think - considering all the active Kgtners - the thing is of too serious a kind. And hence I have jotted down the “[summa summaresse]” of Froebel’s view of the Gifts- [tinged]
[page 6]
With my interpretation. And this I will be sure- that I do not say too hard things,- and do not dwell too long upon one point- at the hurt of another point. Mr Kraus taught one this. I am going to have only 15 minutes, - & little can he said in that time; but- I am apart- I shall need just 20 minutes- & if they “stop” me after 15 minutes- some points will have to be “left out”. - Some day I must tell you about Mrs [Heernart’s] letter. I shall be a “member”

“In dead” of that great German Kg: [Union] here-after, - in spirit I always have been with them.- It does me good- that I can speak thus [unreservedly] to you, my loved Kgten daughter- feeling- I shall be “understood”.-
With loving greetings & best “good wishes” for the well- being and happiness of your family & yourself, I am - as ever-

My dear Mrs Meleney,-
Here I am- among trunks & box & packed- all “ ready to move”, - and yet - unable to move. The apartment is not ready. the Workman are yet busy! It appears, - they ought to have commenced two months ago,- or rather “ sooner”. And now they have to hurry- which is not a wise thing in such a case. Of course- my “ lease” here is up before October the first; but- I part at the Hoffman Arms for the month of September, - in order to be settled- & read for my Winter’s work. - This all is very awkward for me ; but- no - one can swim against the stream. - over

Your letter was “ good to read”. You & Mr Meleney are “ wise parents”. you well “ read” the fruit of your dealings and judicious treatment with your children. My heart just “ goes out” to you - at present- - more than “ ever before”. May be, that the remembrance at long ago- draws me to you. God be with you, darest!- I never hear from Charleston now.- in the September Member of the Kg: Magazine I red, that the choice of President- Kgten Dpt N.E.A has been a “ good one” Miss O’Grady, Teacher’s College. And further,- that Dr Hall presided at the United child- close & Kgten Meeting- the first,- and that there was an “ animated decision”.

Miss Holmes gave a “good” address. It appears, that I made after all no mistake and having her for “President” this year; it brought about- what I had aimed- at- a connection with the South, arousing and interest for the earnest work being done there. - And further- she had also a “Parents-day”- out growth of what I commenced in Charleston.- I am happy about it. - Dear Mrs Meleney, - I do not expect any answer from you. Only one thing I would long to know, namely: when do you expect the “Advent” to take place? I want to be the are you these days- with loving- & prayer. - “My love” to the Meleney family! My Dear Mrs Meleney,
Pardon delay in answering your last “good” letter, and not responding [ere] this in sending the news-paper clipping about Dr Hall’s Session. You will find it in the enclosed- as you handed it to me. Even now I have read it !- Much that Dr hall has said, is true. Mr Kraus & I often discussed these points. We must, however, be careful in dealing with them. Some time during the year, we may take this up [aid] one of our meetings!- I will refrain from [illegible] now. Mrs. Wheelock struck some “good points”, but has not been quite [forcible] enough.
[page 2]
The [best] persons taking up such “discussions] are necessarily in the dis-advantage. Discussions should include “a thorough knowledge of that which is to be discussed”-it as too important. Dr Hall is a “curiousness”. He, certainly shows, that he read [Froebel]; but what he said, shows also “that he read others”, who -years ago- in Germany- brought up [sincere] points; but - like a move- vanished .---
More [anon] about this !it is too [hot] to be “scientific”, and my “restful holy day is not yet quiet over. I shall leave again, to return about the 17th of September; and then I shall be very busy with preparations of Class, interviews, and my removal to “higher regions” in our Hotel. Oct : 5th I shall resume my work. And after the [sundale] of October I shall be at home again for my friends on

On Saturday mornings.-
I had a delightful, quiet & restful time at Narragansett Pier. Even Miss Sciepstein I saw but little, her house being “renovated”, her presence “at home” was needed.
There were some delightful people at the Inn, & among them, my dear young friends ! Mr & Mrs Comstock and little Johnathan. I found a “kind of Mr. Taylor” at the Pier, and had daily “drives all over the county”- I had my “Salt water baths” while I left, and looked “sun-burnt” & in general good condition, when I left a week ago.-
What a summer experience I had this year ! almost too much-including the excitement in June, the week in Washington, D.C.
[page 4]
Martha’s Vineyard, and Narr-gansett Pier. All in all, it has done me good, has tended to “rouse me” completely to my former independence-which some of my former [pinpoints]- in their loving endeavor- would almost “[crowd-out]”.- I am ready for the Fall “campagne” “Class”, “[Alumni]”, “Meetings,” and whatever else may turn up. I have a “charming” remembrance of my Martha’s Vineyard experience, - & shall entertain it always ‘. - Goodbye, and love to all !
Tell the boys, that the Bird’s Nest I brought safely home, - as also the pretty little [up & saucer] you gave me. - I trust, Grace is “hale & well” by this time.-
Pardon the [serawl]! I am [writing] on my lap.

My dearest Mrs Meleney,
Yesterday- in Mr Meleney’s welcome letter- I hear, that you are not very well. I am very, very sorry I am sorry to hear this; for I had hoped, that you would return from your Summer’s “outing” strong and well. - It was impossible for me- to write before; for - the “moving” too all my strength.

And then the “fixing”, and “getting-ready” for the Winter’s work. - I would to write about our beloved Emma Newman. I had a letter from her friend- Mrs Mary Hall- of Spencer, N.Y. who traveled with Emma & her father in Nova Scotia. She been to “fail suddenly”- and the morning of the fatal day- she was removed to the Hospital at Halifax; but - passed away- in the evening. The Doctor said, that she must have suffered for about two years of

Diabetes, - & that she could not have lived. It is too sad! I am truly grieving for her. - And I am so thankful- that she could be with us last Winter! And have the gifted young woman with us- in all her sweetness & goodness- for which God must have loved her- that He needed her. - Blessed be her memory- & the influence she enacted. We shall never forget her; for she will be a “living” memory to us- always.- Yesterday- we missed you at our first Alumni Exec: Com. Meeting. Your letter was read:- “that you would be with us- at our first

Alumni meeting- this Season, - & be our Chairman. This pleases me greatly, - for- I have - “reluctantly”- assented to give the lecture on that day. - What do you think- of our “Kraus graduate- luncheon”? About 200 will be assembled. It was a great task- to find all the names * addresses; so many have married; many have died; and a large number - have never reported - all these years!- I hope- our’s will be a happy “re-union”. - My thoughts go- with much anxiety- to the appointments of the Training teachers in Manhattan & B’klyn- that the right person may be found. Miss Harvey & Mrs Miller would be fine representations- standing up for the truth & “genuine” work.-
I hope- this may find you in better health, - & as happy as you deserve - in your delightful “Family wish”. My love- I send to all. Affectionately yours

My dearest Mrs Meleney,
Weeks have gone by- & I have not written to you! - After my “Summer’s work” was completed, - I grew so lazy - that it because an effort to hold a pen in my hand. I rarely enjoyed a vacation - in pure restfulness- so much at the Summer. If I were to begin to tell you of all my lovely experiences- widening my heart,

And extending “my views”- I would had to write you a Volume. I am truly glad of the Summer’s experience. My work at the University - though taxing my strength - were a real pleasure to me. Dr. Merrill - who came “out” to visit us one day - called my “class” the Banner class - as it was the largest at the University. Dr McCracken was not present; he & Mrs
[page 3]
McCracken were suddenly called - away to Bairet, where their youngest son was very ill with Typhoid fever. They are all home now, I believe. Many of the wives of the Professors became very much interested. It is lovely at University Heights. Such beautiful drives. I lived at a very nice boarding house, & made some lovely acquaintances. There were students from almost all over the Union. Four Training School teachers attended my lectures- & I made
[page 4]
Warm friends with them. And - if only you could have witnessed the feeling of all - against the “Program - work”! It would have done your heart good.- The enclosed Circular will tell you of one branch of my “Winter work”. If you have to give me any advice - do so, - it will be grateful received.- Though Anna Harvey & Miss Roethgen I heard a little of your life at Martha’s Vineyard. I suppose - you are still there - with Grace & George Lieber. I hope that this year I may see the little “resting”.

The boys are growing- I will hardly know them - when seeing them. I hope - they are all well now. I send my love & good wishes to the “family entire”. - Mr Meleney is kept very busy - as I see by the accounts of the Papers - of the tremendous work done in our Public Schools. - I have only just come home. “Welcome home” !
My dear Mrs Meleney,
Your letter from August 14th reached me- and I hope, you do not think ill of me because I left the same unanswered. My “loved” Mrs Meleney,
I am so truly sorry- to see, that you are ailing, And I wanted to relieve you of the sad task to speak of our beloved Emma Newman.- You did it so feelingly so beautifully- that every- one’s heart was touched. I could not have done it as well, - though I warn her b”loss”

Deeply. It is always “previous-ones” who are called home! We shall meet them again; the will help- preparing a place for us.-
I wanted so much to speak you; but - there are always so many - that no “indinvidual” though can expressed. - Your little daughter “Gracie” was dear.
I loved her always

For your sake. I do begin to love her for her own sake. And- how I shall regret your absence - from our “Luncheon”. I wish - it could have been post-poned; but- the Com: have issued the cards. I have out yet heard the details of what is to be; I am acquainted only with the “general” arrangements. Within the next days- I shall hear wore about it.

I am kept very busy. It was a heavy task- these last months- after the “ closing” of my Train:class- the university 6 weeks- my “ shake up” with the turn- over of the carriage- then- my removal- the interviews- & finally the opening of the class. Yet- I enjoyed it all,- I.e. not the breakdown of the coupe,- but the work. - When you come home- I shall hope to see you “ hale & well”, - and then I also hope to see your “Baby-boy”.-

My dearest Mrs meleny,
Thanks for your very kind assent to be our Chairman on this eventful first meeting, the first Anniversary of our “Infant Association”,- & if continuing to grow tis successfully, & suffer of no “diseases”- it will be in due time a strong “Grant-Association”- may - better than that, viz. A true “Woman Association”
[Page 2]
Of course, you will introduce Mrs. Hughes to the Association. Mr Hughes wrote that she would come from the Station straight to the Hotel. & he thought, would come in time. I am sorry, we do not know with what train she is coming-or we might do something to make her feel comfortable.-We have arranged, that the members of the Association can have a

Luncheon consisting of sandwiches, milk, coffee or tea, for 25 Cents, to be served in the Dining room of the Hotel up on the 10th floor. Will it not be nice to be able to be this united? I hope all will join; the price is small, & it will be quite sufficient for a Luncheon,-& no one will-I hope- rush away- & everything will be so much nicer. Rose Nathan has been to [active] in all this, that she deserves a “vote of thanks.’- I am going to keep my promise and have just finished my.

I know, this is much time,- but something good cannot be given in a shorter time- concerning my subject. I hope, you will frankly tell me, after the meeting is over, how you liked it, - & where it was wanting -
Good bye until Saturday. We will convenience promptly at 10:15A.M.- And, dear Mrs Meleney, I have taken the liberty to have two of my this year’s Class present; one is a cousin of Susan E. Blow, & she was 3 yrs ago in the Class, & has a triple to finish up,- & cannot be here after Christmas. And the other, Miss Ferris, went all through last year,- but by my advice is just taking some of the Lectures again.- And there are 3 or 4 graduates who wish to join at once, - true ones- & as a vote is to be taken for last year’s class, these ladies can likewise- be voted upon: Miss M Douglas, the Misses Sharpe, & I bought the other name. Good night!- it is [illegible]!- Your with love

I thank you for your “good letter.”- There have been busy weeks for me; however, the [waves] begin to [abate]. I am well, & enjoy “my work & my play”; in fact, - my work is my play. With loving thoughts for you all, & greetings to all,- I am Truly yours

Dear letter, the contents of which I appreciate very much. - What a lovely “thoughful” birthday the dear child had. There is so much of the “one” family spirit in your household. The “date” when I take a “wee part” in the Mothers’ Assembly, will be Thursday, October 30th, P.M. My turn comes at 3:30 P.M. - and 15 mts are strictly to be adhered to. I have “boiled down” as much as possible; but - Miss Kohler “groans”- says: the best part, thus, is lost. I cannot be helped! The “speakers” are innumerable”. And as long as Americans “crowd”, - well- you know my views in regard to this. I accepted- in order- not to be “ungracious”.

Mrs Haven,- and one of my earlier graduates (now conducting a Public Sch: Kgten- & a very able young woman) Mrs Mary Wells - also will speak upon the subject of Kgten. It seems, that my subject has been transferred to Mrs haven. So I made my little address according.- You never weary me, with a long letter. My dear Mrs. Meleney,
I was unable to see Doctor Wood earlier than last night, he says; his address has not been printed, as it really was only half finished; and is much pressed with business,other-wise he would have written and an extract for our report. He may do it yet- if we give him time.-I under-

stood him sometime ago, that it was soon to be published. It is all that can be done this time to give a sort of sketch of the year's work and no one can do that better than you, you dear, true ideal Mother! God bless you and yours.-You are right, we all have felt, that this was a year of development and growth. Truly, "in union there is strength"!-And speaking of myself-I do feel so strengthened by all of you my dear kinder-garten children, that it seems -a new life has come to me.-
[page 3]
Anna Harvey wrote to me, & I to her,-& i spoke about the same to Mrs. Peek and Mrs. Slade- and we all are of opinion, that you, dear Mrs. Meleney, should be our first Chairman. You are a graduate of longer years-and besides, Anna Harvey tells me, you did not occupy the Chair last Winter.- I was going to mention this at our last Ex. Com. Meeting, but having brought out so many new paint, thought, you might think me too forward,- and hence I proposed “begin like last year”. If only one had spoken, we could have
[page 4]
arranged it then & there. As it is, - it will not be too late- if you are willing. There are other reasons, that you should open the years' work: your sweet dignity & motherliness-will & must impress all. I think , there is nothing to say but you say 'yes' to Anna Harvey & to me. Anna Harvey is the truest, dearest girl, - so unselfish- and always for the best. I will write her by the same [Mail], & tell her, that I wrote to you, & explained it all. Anna Harvey will then preside at the November Meeting; and so on. - Mrs Hughes has not written to me. Mrs Hughes wrote "that Mrs H. would be proud to address our association, & she would in N.Y. early Oct 30th, & he thought, in time for our meeting.- Yours with love

My dearest Mrs Meleney,
I am so thankful to know, that the operation you underwent- has been a successful- one one. Now be doubly strong- & go mainly well. And I trust we may soon see your precious self. I did not know if this- until your letter arrived. You have such fine causes of being happy- & my heart always ached for you- that a shadow should have

Rest ( so to speak) on your precious, blood life. You have been a brave woman! God bless you- dear dear Carrie Cait.- We had a happy morning of the opening of our meetings- last Saturday. Harriet Littig- the new president- had arranged everything well. Perhaps? you may be with us at our October meeting! Mr Ossian Lang is going to give us an Address.- Our visit to “The Land of the Sky” has done is- oh- so much good. I feel, as if I could do “ double work”. The touch with “Nature” is so grand. And the - to have “my Emma” with me for a companion
[page 3]
Instead of - as in former years- to be “alone”! Emma is “dear”; & I love her ever more. She is devoted to me. The Class-work has commenced - with a lovely “cultured” set of young women; and I we are kept very busy.- My sincerest sympathy I send to Mr Meleney & to you & the children in behalf of “Grandma Meleny”.- In spirit of “science”- changes will take place. It is “Nature's Course”. - In June 1909- it will be fifty years- since I graduated as Kgtner!
How the time seems to fly! I feel- as if I had been but “ recently”- in spite of the many years that have gone by.
My thoughts are often with you & yours. Last year- I had to keep away from my friends- & save all my strength. For my loved “ life work”; & I was rewarded- and having done a good years work with an almost “ ideal” class.- God be with you ever more, my dearly beloved kindergarten daughter.- We hope- to have you for one of our meetings.

My dear Mrs Meleney,
It is “ Election- day”,- and consequently- we had no session in ”Class”.- I wanted to write to you oh so many times; but you have no idea all of the work, trouble & tribulations we had to dispense and with. It would land too far- to attempt writing about it.- It was a pleasure - to see you at our last meeting, & to have you by my side at luncheon; although that gave me not the satisfaction- as
[page 2]
I could have had you all “ by myself” myself.- I know, this sounds rather selfish! but then- I had not seen you for such a long- long!- I rejoice in my heart, to see you looking so well- and so happy. Surely- it is verified- that I always called the Meleney family : “ the happy family” family. Surely- your reward is on hand- for your ever-loving, faithful devotion to your family! Those Splendid boys of yours!
[page 3]
How should I love to see you then!- I am busy- from 6:15 a.m. until 1:30 a.m.- and- with my “ simple” life,- I am well & “ feel happy”. my Emma has a part in that. What a golden heart she is!- dear Mrs. Meleney, I was and am extremely interested in the final “ I'll come” of who is to be a supervisor of Kgtners of Greater New York. The “ news” about it, I heard,- were uncertain I thought, by what doctor Maxwell wrote many months ago,- that- in appointing mrs. Curtis- the question was settled. But no- it seems not to be so !
[page 4]
Mrs Glidden of Pratt- seems to be on the “eligible list”, - and I have taken the liberty , to address Mr Meleney about this. I consider her to be quite a remarkable woman; true to Froebel, & yet not “set”! Her preparation & learning , & experience also are remarkable. - Yu & Mr Meleny know, what I think about our able Anna Harvey! And I fully had hoped and expected- that she would come in consideration! Has she applied? Or does her modesty keep her back?
[page 5]
I feel so “ helpless” in My Desire- to have the right person in the right place. When last I saw Anna Harvey- she did not express herself to me; and she appeared to be so devoted to Adelphi College! What will be the “ outcome” of it all ! Mr Maxwell's opinion- about Kgtens- I am sorry to see in the Papers. Surely- he does not, - can be
[page 6]
Mean: that he considered the Kgten as an “intellectual preparation? Froebel meant it for “character building” - more than anything else! And just that is needed now-adays- when crime has because so “broad -spread”, - as the Papers tell us daily. Childhood must be encompassed in “Love”. And- also ! the fault of having not the right good results- can be found in the many poorly trained Kindergarteners! It seems- that Music is
[page 7]
The “golden key” for position in Kgtens, - and - examination of higher grades, - where as the true knowledge & idea of Kgten Methods & Philosophy - receives the lesser attention- I hope, - you will pardon me- for this “outburst” - that had better not have been written down. But- to you , my dear & “ture” Kindergarten- daughter- it all came- “natural”, - as ever often formerly we might have talked the over- face to face, - and “heart to heart”
[page 8]
Do “Tear” this letter, - & “forget it”. - My letter to Mr Meleney is a “formal” one- but “sincere”. - And - oh! How I should love to say “my say” about my beloved & able Anna Harvey! You know that; & you and Mr Meleny , both , have the like faith in her.- To- morrow, I understand- the “decision” & “appointment” will be made ! May the able men, who hold this in their hands- by guided by over Father in Heaven- for - it is somewhat a question of real or woe of “future generation”. - My love- to you & “yours”. God bless you all ! - I feel, as if I belonged a little bit to you ! - Affectionately- Yours as ever,

My dear Mrs Meleney
Loved Kindergarten- daughter and dear friend!
Your letter of this A.M. added to the sunshine pouring into my windows this truly “peaceful” day. How kind of you to write such a loving letter, - and - how could you know of my Birthday? I always kept it so “still”, - unknown. My friends are already kind to “overflow” with me; and “birthdays to remember” grow mostly to
[Page 2]
to be a “troublesome affair.”- My table is to-day- full of loving greetings &c. from far and near. I never imagined, that “my daughters” could think so much of me. My heart widens even more in “grateful love”, my lonesome feeling has left me. The “friend of my life-work, my dear husband-seems to be ever near me, & -with this- I cannot be “lonesome”,- the more so, as I am - as I have been these past 26 years- a busy woman. My health is good. And
[page 3]
When I had to fore-go the treasured pleasure of being present at our alumni meeting, it was not that I was overworked & needed rest, &c. I did not wish to alarm the Alumni Members, that's all,- & hence my message by Miss Kohler.-About 2 months ago I slipped & fell across the car-tracks. Two good men pulled me off,- & I had been much shaken by this & my knees were sorely hurt. The wound healed. I must have [serakked] it, - for Oct 28th, I had a 5 hrs chill, & then high fever. Blood-poison had set-in. Saturday- I was unable to raise my head. All, that [hunger skill] could do, was done by
[page 4]
my new physician whom I had sent for; and Wednesday, Nov: 2nd I could be once more with my delightful “Class”. There is “fine quality” in this class & I am very happy with them. It is so much easier for me, to have the alone to myself,- than “direct others”- Edith Slade is happy in her work; and Miss Peek is happy too; I was favored in recommending her; for this, for which she is so well with. I would have had Miss Peek again with me this Season, if my “Class” had formed earlier, & as this took place only a few days previous to opening- i could not afford the [illegible] of an assistant.- Who it all “providence”?- When seeing you last, I had no idea, that so much time
{page 5]
would elapse, ere meeting you again. My trouble is not quite cured,- & my medical adviser permits work- but “otherwise” rest & quiet so that no future difficulties may arise. I am, of course, very obedient to his superior knowledge. Walking is yet but a “hard” to me. By our next Meeting i hope to be right well again.-I missed your “paper” dear Carrie Cait! it was a great disappointment to me I had a good many letters, & all speak of you, your lovely spirit & the help you gave them.
[page 6]
And now I must come to a “close”. - Your little girl, I trust, is hale & well. - I thank Mr Meleney for his kind wishes.- Only lately I heard, That Mr Meleney- the only one from among my “adopted sons in the Kgten” had ”a past” in the Loving Club. How “dear” in him!- Emma Newman will come to me & lecture in Spring, I had a letter from her. Please, bear that in mind for our Alumni.- Dr Conant will give us a lecture on “Psychology”. She is Professor if the at the Normal College; & she is a [purpose] of Dr Shinner & Dr Munsterberg.- Dr Merrill will lecture on Gardens & Garden-work- Miss Blow, I trust, will do [so] the promised favor too.- With loving greetings for all the family, yours as ever.

Only I wish, I could have had you “all to myself”.- - The picture at George Lieber- is dear. Thank you - for giving it to me. I feel quite badly, that I did not think of his birthday. It is “naughty” to say - but “true” - all the same: “I am so busy,

-That many things have been crowded out. “God bless” the dear child, - & his parents & brothers & sister.- I had a “lovely” time- when invited by the Alumnae Normal College on October 25th for their first Annual meeting. To-morrow is the first lecture of my “Story cycle” at University Extension Normal College Alumnae. And- I am so horse- as a crow.- This Morning, my “class” has been in Session - as usual, - and - being already hoarse - I overstrained my voice. My dear Mrs Meleney,
Only “to - day” I can find a restful time, to write. I wanted to do so- since our last Meeting. The Hall, on that day, was unfortunately so cold, that - I fear- we all have suffered from it.- Truly - you have grown to be a “young woman” again! It was delightful to see and to hear you. You seemed to be so [brine] full of “Motherlove”. It warmed everybody’s hear!
[page 2]
I only wish, that somebody could have “jotted- down “ what you said; but then - it could not have given the right impression! For it needed to see you- while speaking! Thank you - for coming and speaking for our Association!- It was quite a disappointment, that you were not present at our “Reunion Luncheon”. It was a beautiful sight- those 90 “Kraus girls” - Mrs Blow from 40 yrs ago

Up to the young girls of my present class! And - the surroundings were so beautiful- at Hotel Majestic! Yes, dear Carrie Cait - I missed you!-
When the weather grows warmer, you must not forget to “look in” at our this year’s class - at 11 A.M. on a Thursday- when “at play”. - I hope, you may also be able to attend our next Meeting!-

My dear mrs Meleney,
It seems to be a long while since I had a line from you; and not having seen, either- Anna Harvey or Mrs Pashley ( i.e. A. Harvey I saw a minute at our last alumni) - I have been unable to hear anything about you. I suppose you know, that the Executive and Advisory members of the J.K.U. you met November 8th, - called by Mrs. Putnam. I have much to tell you.- Mrs. Holmes from Charleston, S.C. also was present at that meeting, - & spent an evening with me, - as also did Mrs Putnam.- Mrs Hughes gave me a lovely surprise, to spend a morning in my “class” & remained the Afternoon. So did mrs Putnam. And Dr Merrill came to see my “class” at Play- over- at Tuxedo Hall. Then - my Extension Course takes
[page 2]
Much of my time & interest- and appeals to me- as I “ can go on”- further- with them. Such a fine “ set” of women take part in the same. You see- what a busy women I am.- Thank God- I am well; & that- together with being so busy- keeps me well.- I also had a great “ joy” come coming, buy a “ recognition” that a member of my family received from the Government abroad. Of course- this does not “ touch me”,- but it pleases me for the- one - who does not live on earth anymore.- Do you remember Mrs. Mary Joan Miller of Chicago? We have seen her frequently- at the JKU meetings. She is quite a remarkable young woman. Among other things- she is a graduate of the hailman Kg: Training
[page 3]
School; then became a student in the Kg- College under Better Harrison & Mrs C-r-o-u-s-e, & graduated from the College. Then she held position of Kg: Director in a first class Private School for nine years- at a high Salary. Also she studied “ some” with mrs. Putnam,- and also was student at the Chicago University,- of Dr Dewey also, - &c &c.- She is with me- sitting “ in line” with the regular class students- like a real “ learner”.- Then- another former graduate of ours ( 7 years ago)- who was the last 3 years under the “Program” regime in Washington DC.- she could not stand it any longer- came here- to “ refresh” herself & “ strengthen” herself with me. I directed her- to also attend Prof Earle Barnes’ lecture course at the Normal College; while Mrs. Miller ( who previously had taken a similar lecture course with Prof Barnes) - attends Prof Shaw’s lecture course - and also my Extension Course.- My “class”
[page 4]
This year is of particular Cosmopolitan character.- My thoughts often are with you, George Lieber- & all the family. I trust, Mr. Meleney has quite recovered from his ailing,- so that your “ dear” Motherheart is happy.-
I have seen very little this year of my old friends,- every body being very busy. But all the same- I am not “ alone”. The World is “ moving- on”.- I am living- out of “ class- work” a very quiet life. I need this- if I shall do justice, “ all- around”. - & remain strong.- I hope, though, you will be able to come & see me. We can make an “ appointment”,- some A.M. to see the latter exercises of class- work one morning,- & then take Luncheon with me.- My love to you - & your family- great & small.- Hoping, this finds you well, I am affectionately

My dear Mrs Meleney,
Will you & Mr Meleney give me the pleasure and dine with on Saturday December 3rd, at six o’ clock? I have also invited Dr & Mrs Balliet and one or two other friends. I hope, you will both be able, to accept. I want so much to make this a “pleasant” evening! It seems so long- since I saw you socially.
[page 2]
We are all so very busy- each, in his own way. - I hope, that you & your family keep well; & that you have continuous “good news” from your dear about boy.- Anna Harvey tell me, that George Leer is “charming”. How I should have loved to have him my Kgten. I had a severe attack of throat - trouble; and- for nearly a fortnight- talking was painful to me; & I could not speak above
[page 3]
Above a “whisper”.- My “Class-work” is a joy to me; but “outsiders” task me too much; & it is difficult to control that part of my life; but- Mrs Emma is learning to manage often for me. I do want- to have some “free” time- to see my friends- which is such true pleasure to me.- Also- I try, to get some “outside” recreation; and I have heard several of the Ben Greet Shakespeare Plays,- & enjoyed them thoroughly, [protective]

as the “outfit” of Stage &c. Would seem.- The Thanksgiving holidays I may spend- away from the City- a few quiet & restful days. Christmas will soon be at the door. How the time flies!- Adieu, dearest Carrie Cait! Hoping, you have not tired yourself too much by setting your house in order,- and also- hoping, you can give me a “ready assent” for December the third, - I am Yours with a heart full of love.

My dear Mrs Meleney,
I trust, the journey to & from Springfield came off satisfactorily- I want to say, that Anna Harvey & I thought it would be “due” to Dr Merrill to [preside] at our next Meeting; she has been written to,- & has accepted.- Now it remains between Mrs Demarest and Miss Harvey - who of them will preside at the

Mrs Collins has resigned. Miss Hay was asked to take her place,- but declined for good reasons. What do you think about Grace Parsons ? I think, she would make a good, active substitute for the

And also about the “Froebel- house” plane; & I will not write about that.- Steiger has offered to print my Message without charge,- give as a certain member, - & have them to diffuse himself,- as he wants. Thing for all [bhild]- study people- parents, Kgtners, Teachers, and- University Professors- to make their Mother “know thyself”, which would lead to “self- [defense]”,- “self-improvement,”- & c and in that case- children would readily “accept & [initiate]” what they saw, - & all this “talki-talki” would be unnecessary.- I did not say the exact words of the letter passage,- but gave fully the meaning !- I suppose,
[page 7]
I wish- the day had twelve hours more- there is so much to do, - & all must be done well.-
I attended the Child study Meeting at the Normal College in the Afternoon, - & saw, in the distance, your husband. I wonder what he thought of the lectures given. I say: there was no justice [done] to the work in [aim],
[page 8]
They will have to “dig” themselves thru it! They would get it easier, if they were to become true Froebel- Students ! For- Froebel was the [bhild]- study man, - the Psychological of Childhood.- I must break off,- or I shall never finish.- Dr Merrill writes: “It is because your ideals are so high that we feel their power over us. “ Who not that prettily said?-
With much love always yours

My beloved Kindergarten daughter,
Carrie Cait meleney,
Your birthday letter
Was received- giving me very great pleasure. The spirit enlivening all you said- is worthy of your elevated thoughts & feelings. I thank you- for all you said! And this leads me to the “connecting thought” of what you are and have done for your large
[page 2]
Family & circle of friends - you “blessed dear Mother”- Do not make an “effort” to come & see me - much as I should love to have you with me. We are near each other, - and “in communion” all the while.- All the members of your family are dear to me; as your children matured- my loving interest has grown. I hope- the “tonic” of the hills
[page 3]
Has really done you good, dear friend. And how happy Grace must have been - to have you with her for a while- “exclusively” .- Your “thought” of my father & another has touched me deeply. I am now seventy- nine years ``young”; and I cannot realize this! God’s blessing has been with me- all my life long! And that I have my beloved daughter Emma with me ! she send her loving regards to you!- And I send a heart
[page 4]
Full of love, & good wishes to you- for “renewed strength & health “- I have had many loving letters & messages for my birthday; and I have a “thankful joy” in my hears for the love of so many friends- God bless me with.-

My dear Mrs Meleney,
Every evening I wanted to write and thank you for the sweet flowers,- for the letters your boys sent me,- and for your own lovely letter. It is so lovely and you all, to take so much interest in me; - and I am more affectionate than you may
[page 2]
may I imagine. November 8th was a happy day to me- with the many “ love letters”, floral and other greeting. My heart grew large within me,- and many a time the tears would spring to my eyes- appreciative- happy tears. The only thing I miss, was Mr Kraus; but- I am not ungrateful. I am truly happy in- what
[page 3]
the past two years brought me- & I still feast on that,- and- upon what these last five years have brought to me.- Even- the experience with my intended Extension Course. I had no idea- idea. application applications for could swell up to such numbers! - and yet- I- for “ at present” at least,- until I can “ see my way”.- I was not quite
[page 4]
Prepared for this, & will tell you about it later. I am an idealist. And Mr Kraus never hindered me in trying to carry out my ideals. And I know- if,- he would sanction my action.-
How I think of you - “Mother & Child”- it is not indeed a “ holy infant so tender and mild”?-
How well you are prepared to guard, guide, educate and take care of the Infant!
[page 5]
How does Froebel term it ?-
“O God, my God ! in making me a wife, Thou’st crowned me with the woblest joy of life;
And now The greatest gift thou sendest me:
An angel child have I received from thee,
—----------------------------------------------------
Though horn in pain, take now thy peaceful rest
My darling child, upon thy mothers breast:
Thee will we guard mid earth, perpetual strife,
Thou crown- and sweet reward of our life”.-
—-----------
Dear Carrie- you “love” - as expressed in this
[page 6]
Last letter of you’s,- and you faith in me - dear me good ! Thank you. It certainly is a feeling of “equpois” to have true understanding among friends; and I believe - this is the case between us two - the young and the old. - If you lived “near-by”,- how often would I look-in opon you to see the new-born babe. Oh. is a babe not wonderful- beautiful - with all its possibilities? I trust- he will be
[page 7]
Gaining duly- day by day. Of course- such a “ tiny baby creeps mamares into one’s heart. And when there- how it feels it- for ever & ever! I wonder what his name will be? Fred- after Froebel? Or after Dr Cait?- or William after Mr Kindley? - or Horace - after Horace Man ? - well- in due time I shall hear of it. Surely- Baby becomes now “ an educator” to his brothers and sister.
Are you gaining strength? “Make haste slowly”, dear Mrs Meleney.
[page 8]
By the by,- the little woolly hood can easily be made smaller. It is not for “ out of doors”,- but - when going thru the halls, &c. - The “bibs” can be used even now- before the tiny teeth are coming- hidden in the pink gums now.
Every baby is “ your first baby”,- because each is first & No 1 in its place. Sit children! You and Mr Meleney are rich indeed-
The Alum: Meeting was a happy-one; but I was merely a spectator.
[page 9]
Some little children were present,- and they gave the real “ life- touch” to it all. To-morrow- the girls will come to me for the Ex. Com Meeting. I am not going to take much of an active part in the meeting this year.- I think- better not! With loving affection & [husks] of “good wishes”
Yours always

You know, we want to have you on one of the Ex: Com: of our Association. Please let me hear from you, if you will favor us? - Say "yes".- Also your name was missing from among the "slips" to give subject for discussion or instruction. Please, do so now,- one or more subjects. It will help!- I think, you are just as pleased as I am, that Jennie Merrill has

I am very sorry, that you have moved to Brooklyn. All out of "selfishness" I say so for now I cannot go and see you! I know, I should not get "beyond the Bridge". Brooklyn seems such a strange place to find yourself in.

My dear Carrie Cait Meleney,
Mt thoughts have been so frequently with you, - that your letter came almost - “as an answer”, - We are very, very sorry, and grieved, to hear that you have been - & are yet suffering; & the members of your family too. The “Grippe” is a terrible thing, Emma & I - we also have battled with the same since before Easter. Now- we begin to recuperate, - & it is goof to hear from friends. This will be the first real letter I am going to write. Dearest, - you will have to take “tender care” of yourself- so as to be th ejoy of the members of your large family. It is a real blessing. - your “invited” loving family. - Of course, you enjoyed reading about [Petluzze]- who is an inspiration
[page 2]
[Pestaluzze]- followed Rossau; - “to return to Nature.” Frobel was Pestalozzi' best pupil & follower. Mr Krays was a “true Pestaloggian” he knew Froebel, - & was a disciple of that great Man.- Froebel rose for beyond Pestalozzi’s ideal - in using objects, & His dominant ideal being “Self-activity”- he could not be satisfied with any educational process that ended with the development of the receptive & reflective powers. - Pestalozzi & Froebel inseparable The great [Disturbing] propagated and advanced both.- I will not enlarge upon this, -as you are aware of it- just as much as I am. - Do not trouble your dear mind- that you are unable to come to New York. We know- you are “with us”, - and - we are “with you”.- We love you- & - of course- miss you
[page 3]
You do not say anything about dear Grace! How you must miss, having her with you.- May 10th. I will finish this letter now. - From the Hughes family, Toronto I have had no news lately; the last I heard - was an about agonized letter from Mrs Hughes- because of her beloved San Chester- who joined the Army in Canada, - & has gone- we believe - with the rest “to the front”. Laura is the “comforter” in that dear family.- The War is “terrible”. God give us peace !- “Peace on Earth- to men of good will I pray .- The beautiful Park is in its glory - of the new “green”. - We send our love & good wishes to all the members of your family.- Good bye- for to day. Affectionately- always your Kgten Mother

My dear Mrs Meleney,
I feel , as if I had not been “polite” when looking-in upon your meeting, and not being of the same opinion in regard to that book: “the students of Froebel” - I took the book with me, that evening to the dinner table; and, dear friend, I find- that it is all right for our library. The only thing I felt, was: it contains

“Pieces” from the [Edne]: of man”, - & thought- it was better that the young Kgtners, who would probably come to read & study first “the whole”, - which is, according to Kgten principles, current. Please, do not mine me, & buy the book.-
I have forwarded my program to mr. Shepherd if I had time, I would [buy] it for you!-
[page 3]
You will deliver your paper on Wedn: 11th in the afternoon, right after I had my “say”. Emma Newman will be on the platform July 12th.-- I hope to hear yet from Mr. Hughes that he will come!- I have written to two boarding houses at Charleston,- on the Battery; they were highly recommended. And as soon as an answer comes, I will let you know.- I am very busy- the work accommodates so! How good it
[page 4]
It is to hear of your influence, as you do among the mothers & Kgtners.- I hope, you will give the Kgtners at Charleston some strong “points”,- They need it!-
I am so glad to know your “home”,- for I can visit you in “mind” - & be with you & yours.- Love to all

My dear Mrs Meleney,
I owe you a letter- you are always so thoughtful & kind. My hands & head have been “full”- and I would not follow my inclination. It pleases me so much that you are pleased with my simple work for “little hands” I have always had the idea in my mind, “that we could not do enough to simplify things for our dear very young children.
[page 2]
At that April meeting it pleased me so much that you called special attention to my remarks- emphasizing the Educational value of doing the work rightly. Anna Harvey kindly sent me one of your this year's “Vineyard” Circulars. I hope, You will not tire yourself out. There is no objections to show “the work” at the Vineyard, my dear friend. I gave it for the purpose of being made useful for the little-ones.- i do not know, whether ]Steiger] would send “Samples” of materials- or not. Why not write & ask him, addressing Mr E Steiger, Jr.

Is it not lovely to find, how “good work” is always being recognized?- I hope to see you on June 10th, when I shall give a “Reception” to my many daughters, in the Afternoon. My dear Mrs Meleney,
-Perhaps you have heard through Anna Harvey, that her lovely people, Mrs Willetts, who holds the position at the Trenton City High School, which is under Dr. J. B. Gregory- a friend of yourself & Mr. Meleney, I believe. Mrs. Harvey told me, that Mrs Willets was going to give- up her position,- & if I knew of a fine “Kraus girl” to send her to Dr. Gregory to apply for the position.
[page 2]
Right away I thought of able Mrs A.W. Dresser of Burlington, N.Y. She is just fine in her conception & also in the practical “ workings- out, of - both- kindergarten and connecting class work. she has held 10 years experience, has been very successful- & would make a fine “ training- teacher”. she also was a pupil of De Garmo. Mr. Kraus & I thought highly of her. I chose her- as you may remember- to go
[page 3]
To the N.E.A. Meeting at Los Angeles, Cal- to represent me- as President of the Kd: Dpt. which she did ably. I wrote to Mrs Dresser, & urged her to go to Trenton. mrs. Dresser now lives in Burlington, N.J. 226 . High Street.-
Dr Gregory received her well, asked her many questions, & seemed satisfied as to her ability, experience, &c. And said : “he would advise with Mrs Meleney”.-
When seeing mrs. dressers
[page 4]
“ card”- with Mrs. on it- he said that it was against the law to employ married women; & he said- he considered it an unjust-one, especially in this work where experience was so essential, Miss Dresser said he was “ very gracious”- the salary is only 600 dollars- but Mrs. D says: “ it is a good field to work- in”. Oh - & Mrs D. would be so happy to work in this field,- as it would lead to training more students, & would give scope for Mothers Meetings, - I also have written to State Supt Baxter about Mrs Dresser- to interest him in her. The “decorum” is now not yet decided- whether the can or cannot consider a married woman. Dear Mrs Meleney- can’t you.
[page 5]
And Mr Meleney put in a word for Mr Dresser? It would be a most kind act- in the case, - & I truly believe - that- if an exception were made- no one would ever regret it. Why - here in New York the same “law” exists- & yet - they do have married Kgtners of much younger age than Mrs Dresser. I wish - we could help her in
[page 6]
Getting this good position- or another-one.- Do - please- make a quick effort-else it may be too late.-
To-day, The Ex. Com. Meeting had its last this year’s Session at my rooms. I treated them with Strawberries & cream, and we had a “good time”. - We planned for all the Meetings of next year; and - at one of the meetings we want to

My dear Mrs. Meleney,
I hope, you were not over-tired when reaching home ?!-It troubled me greatly that I had to keep you waiting so long, -but was unable to do otherwise- until noon. There was quite a “string of young Kgtners” calling, previous to your announcement, - and when all were gone, I asked Mrs Woodward to go to my Rooms with me, as I had kept her
[page 2]
her waiting too.- When you left, there came - soon after - Miss Florence & Miss Dorman, & they helped to write out “addresses” for the eleventh. Then I went up to my dinner,- and after that, the sick gentleman & his wife came to hear some music. At half past nine I was alone, -and - a little tired. Now I have rested for half an hour in the chair you occupied-when your dear "nose" looked so white! - Now I have yet a little work to do, but felt, I wanted first to write to you, dear young friend!
[page 3]
What did you think of me? Was I too enthusiastic saying at once, that I would join you at Martha’s Vineyard? Did my present feeling of strength mislead me ? and will I be able to assist you in the undertaking? After the - surely - trying time in Washington? I find, according the Program of the N.E.A. that my Paper will be due only on July the eleventh P.M.-and I may be unable to reach the Vineyard not before the end of that week. I have even now consulted the Alumnae. In view of all this, will not you & your husband [illegible] it all? The M.V. Institute commences.
[page 4]
Commences July 12th, I perceive. Thus I could only be of use to you for two weeks. I [calenlate] this: that I surely will have to remain a few days in Washington after my paper,-& being “about” I know, I shall need that rest [are] returning to New York and then I would need again a couple of days [are] setting out for the Vineyard. Remember, I am not your age! Even though endowed with a certain young feeling & [tenacity] of great “Will-power”.- The practice work as also the [games]- I would sustain & [illegible] & direct - just as much as you wanted me too ; but you would have to arrange “plan’, - and materials , &c. I do not want to be “head”,-only assistance.- Now I have said all.

That what we did not come to say yesterday, - and you & Mr Meleney must now decide: whether it may not be better to ask some one else, to be the perfect help to you, which you would need for the three weeks of such engrossing work. - If you would like to see me - I will give “class hours” of this week, - & time when I shall be comparatively free,
viz: Tuesd: Class 10 A.M. until 1:30 P.M- at leisure 4 P.M.- over
[page 6]
Wednesd: Class 10 A.M. until 4:30 P.M.-at leisure 11 AM. for 15mts to an half an hour,- & at 4 P.M. - Thursd: Class 10 A.M. until 1:30 P.M.- at leisure 3:30 or4 P.M.- Tomorrow, Monday, I also am at home towards lunch time, - and after - until 3 P.M.-
Dear Mrs Meleney,- I want to place things clearly before you, - hence all this explanation.- May 29th I will now close the letter written this for last night,-
[page 7]
Although, after re-reading it I find, it might have her greatly condemned. And thus I have to ask your leniency.
Your with yesterday was a delight to me. Your presence always gives me a happy feeling.

My dear Mrs Meleney,
I have to thank you for your dear “ letter. the time is passing so fast- and although I rise regularly at 7 a.m., and do not retire until about an hour after midnight- and even being a “quick” - it is often impossible to do all I want to do & ought to do. Does- I wanted to thank you for your letter- & all the love

that comes from you and yours’ to me. You do not know, how happy it makes me!- By the by- I am afraid- I did not have George Lieber's name correctly put on the little [ring]. I believe- you spell it “Leber”- & I had it “Lieber”.- What a fine time we had at the Adelphi! I was so sorry that not all the members of my class could have
been with us. Six were absent.- I am so very much pleased with what I saw and Anna Harvey's Kgten and in Miss Roethhen’s class. in Boston at the J.K.U. meeting, they made me an Honorary Chairman of the Com: for the Froebel House in Blankenburg. Miss Wheelock wrote- that “an Appeal” had to be made- to collect more money, - and would not I do this ?- I responded, - and the A.M.
[page 4]
I sent an “Appeal” addressed to the Kgteners of the U.S. of America- 2 the Editors of the Kg: Review & Kg: Magazine. But- as I wrote to Mrs. Wheellock- I fear- it was too late to have this go with the June number. and in the June number it should be; For Froebel died June 21st fifty two years ago. Well! we must see.- Then I got a letter from Ashtabula, Ohio- A,7 Mrs Close- asking about Loiuse- Frankenberg’s right to be the first- one to established a Kg: in the U. States. She was. She opened her Kgten in 1858,- while Mrs Peabody went 10 years later to Europe to learn all she could about Kgtens.
[page 5]
And in 1868. Mrs Krige & her daughter Alma opened a Kgten & Tr: class in Boston- under the auspices of Mrs Horace Mann and Mrs Peabody.- I am so perfectly willing- to do such things; but- the time,- the time it takes..- You have no idea, what are number of lovely letters I have received since the Boston meeting, - of people I met there. Thus- I also have great joys! And I am so thankful that I am so well- and able- to make “ end meet”,
[page 6]
When will you leave for Martha's Vineyard? what a good program mrs. Harvey & Mrs Roethgen have.- my summer will be a “ busy” one - mostly spent in “ quiet preparation” for the fall- & the work awaiting me then. I am receiving already many letters- in regard to the Training Class. I am even now busy in the preparation of the new Circular for a one-year course, a two years course,-
[page 7]
and an Extension Course. This letter will be “ general” commencing Nov: !st & closing May 1st,- charges to be but $25.--. this will be for graduates, teachers, mothers- anybody who seeks information & deeper insight. What do you think of that?- Last Wednesday we went to be photographed. It is a fine picture.- Have you heard of the fact: that Laura Fisher of Boston has been engaged by the Kg: Association of New York to give 38 lectures on 38 consecutive Saturdays A.M..
[page 8]
-free lectures- on program work (of course, Miss Blow’s), And Prof. Earl Barnes will probably have a course of 32 lectures- also on Saturday mornings- at the Normal Colleges- under auspices of the Ass: Alumnae.
-Adieu! When I write to you, my dear “ daughter” Carrie Cait- I never know when to stop.-
with loving greetings for the members of the “house of Meleney”, & hoping, the Edmund is well again, I am yours Affectionately
