My dear Mr Gilluby:-
I beg permission to request a favor of you. The circumstance of which are as follows:
It is now several months since I received notification from the State Civil Service Commission that my name was among those at the head of the eligible list for appointment as Asst. Civil Engineer in the Department of the State Engineer and Surveyor. Due to my engineering services in past years, upon federal, state and private work I should be entitled to an appointment to one of the higher engineering positions. Such appointments have been made in the past and I would greatly appreciate it, if you could inform me of any way in which I could hasten matters so as to secure such an appointment upon the Barge Canal Work at an early date, and if you would kindly use your good offices toward that end in my behalf.
Trusting that I am requesting no great inconvenience on your part, and thanking you sincerely, I am,
Very cordially yours,
A. F. Armstrong -

BUCK TO WARD, JULY 31, 1908
BUCK TO WARD, JULY 31, 1908
Letterhead
July 31, 1908
My dear Mr Ward
Your letters recd here today rather last night, we came here last Wednesday, I have not been away over 48 hours, since last summer and am badly in need of a complete rest which I hope to get here. I telegraphed you at the club about 12 M. today asking you to get Archer to actual to the canvass, he was away, but was back when I left, if he cant do it let me know and I will get a good man. I want to say a few words in reference to Hughes; during the month of July we were at the Colonial Hotel at Hitchawan near Croton lake, I came to the office every day, every man at the place except one and he was a democrat saw Hughes would be defeated if nominated I talked with some ten or 12 from Brooklyn New York. Since coming here have only met four men to talk with, all from Brooklyn, they express the same feeling. I believe the sentiment which 2 years ago has all for Hughes in Mt Vernon is now against him. There are about 4 great factors against him
1st The Railroad men
2. " Volunteer Firemen
3 " The Race track people & friends
4 His veto of the 5 cent fare bill to County insurance. of the Church vote is feared, nominate John E. Andrews, he is so well known in the Methodist Church, that his record would go with all the others, and no one would dare deny but that he was a better church man than Hughes.
