My dear Mrs. Meleny,
Today I saw Mrs Blow. She has accepted for Easter, Monday, the 11th,-& at 3PM. She will deliver her lecture. Now-when shall we have [Miss Wheelock?] And should we [not] now have a meeting of the ex. Com ! so as to pre-arrange all and everything?
[Page 2]
I think, it is just too lovely, that we are a Association and can extend courteseys-& show our appreciation to others. I hope to meet Mrs [Wheelock] also privately, by myself. She said she would write & let me know. I hope you children are well again, you dear Mother.-
[page 3]
Mrs McCullogh from St. Louis sent yesterday the promised cards.-I am so sorry, that Mrs Close- after all- wrote or added “admission 50 cents” for our next meeting. I think, we will ignore it.-Shall we not invite Mrs Blow for that meeting.-lovingly yours Maria Kraus Boelte

My dearest Mrs Meleney,
I fear- you are still suffering- because we have not seen you at any of our Meetings- nor heard from you! It grieves me, that this should be so. Spring is coming,- and the fair weather may chase away all pain. This Winter seems to have been extra full with bad cold & other ailments; but I cannot
[page 2]
Be sufficiently grateful that I have been well. My life is a very bust one (& worksome- one)- - but I love the work, which, tother with quiet & simple living, keeps me well. - My “class” is a joy to me; the students consist of able intelligent & talented young girls. They are full of the “true spirit”. My class is but a small- one this year; but a desirable - one. And my daughter Emma

Develops ever more, & is growing into a helpful & able practical Assistant.- Miss Harvey may have told you of our Round- table Dinner- here at Hotel San Remo! I do admire my dearly beloved Anna Harvey!- It is all so very interesting to me.- My thoughts often turn to you & your precious family. I send my love & good wishes for a happy Easter to all the members of the Meleney family. God bless you all!

My dearest Mrs Meleney,
Truly- my heartaches - to know you ailing this long! This “Easter-time” is so full of thoughts of “resurrection”; and thus it may prove to you - that you may rise above all the ailings in renewed health and strength. This Winter has been so full of ailings to alomost every day. May this beautiful easter - tide be the beginning
[page 2]
A “new life” for you!- The change of weather has been almost too sudden- for us poor mortals. I would feel satisfied were it to remain thus; for warmth always agree with me.- From our windows - we can see the “new” green grass. Soon- the trees will show also signs of new life. I am thankful , that the Winter has not harmed me. I could do all of my work with greater ease

Ability & pleasure- than ever before. My class is a small-one, - but a lovely one. I believe, I told you this already in another letter. Tuesday, March 29, we reassure our work with the class. - It is so often - I think of you & your family. What a blessed Mother you are ! - I had a letter from Ada Mareen Hughes. She is so able and true! We are busy for “action” in the Committee of Nineteen, J.K.U.; but - it is all yet much tangled, & it may take years- until the path is clear- which- to my idea- can only be brought about

By a “return to Froebel”.- And- about our Round Table Dinner” at the San Remo- I will tell you later on. It is interesting- to see the different Representatives, as there are: orthodox, radicals , & the various graduation- take dinner so amicably together,- showing such a “friendly spirit”. I rejoice in this,- & see in it “a great promise for the future”. - My letter has grown long, - while I wanted to send you only renewed Easter- greetings and loving good wishes.- The “Meleney family” is always connected with Froebel;’s ideal of a family. Love to all ! and God bless you all! Affectionately

My dear Mrs Meleney-
So much about Boarding places at Charleston: If you write at once to the manager of the Charleston Hotel, you will be able to get a room for yourself. & Robert at reasonable rates. The best rooms have all been taken!-
A very good Boarding house, cool large Rooms
[page 2]
May be had in a highly recommended place: Miss Eliza A. Toomer, 96. Rutledge Ave, Charleston, S.C.- This lady writes: “We have three very large airy rooms with Pizazz[seff]. There rooms are over eighteen feet square & can [have] two beds. With two persons in a room- we ask two dollars each per day- waking four dollars per day for the room.- With three or four persons in the room, the charge will be one dollar & fifty cents each per day.
[page 3]
Two of the rooms open into each other with folding doors, & the glass doors open on a large handsome Southern piazza, commanding a view of the Avenue. We are on two lines of Trolley cars and are near the Auditorium.- Don’t you think, this sounds very good?-
Mrs Bearegard Boez was recommended also very highly; her addresses : 41. East Bay Charleston. Her charges are somewhat higher,- but then she lives near the Ocean. She has “delightfully cool rooms”. - Would you be so

Kind as to send[illegible] - this letter or “information” to Emma Newman? She would like to know. I wonder if Emma N. [gives via] New York?- I shall go by the land-route. And I will not reside at any of the names places as I had a delightful “invitation” for the Convention - days/ I will tell you all about it on Saturday.- I did feel a little shaky during the “hot spell”. My “class-work” is pretty hard at present- as usual at this time of the Season. We commenced “Modeling” to-day.- Lovingly yours Maria Kraus Boelte -

My dear Mrs Meleney,
I owe you a letter- you are always so thoughtful & kind. My hands & head have been “full”- and I would not follow my inclination. It pleases me so much that you are pleased with my simple work for “little hands” I have always had the idea in my mind, “that we could not do enough to simplify things for our dear very young children.
[page 2]
At that April meeting it pleased me so much that you called special attention to my remarks- emphasizing the Educational value of doing the work rightly. Anna Harvey kindly sent me one of your this year's “Vineyard” Circulars. I hope, You will not tire yourself out. There is no objections to show “the work” at the Vineyard, my dear friend. I gave it for the purpose of being made useful for the little-ones.- i do not know, whether ]Steiger] would send “Samples” of materials- or not. Why not write & ask him, addressing Mr E Steiger, Jr.

I am glad, that you like your new home - and I hope- you will all be happy & well there, My thoughts are often with you & yours; it seems, as if you all belonged partly to me,- or I to you,- I read an account of the “[humors]” shown you at Newark. Is it not lovely to find, how “good work” is always being recognized?- I hope to see you on June 10th, when I shall give a “Reception” to my many daughters, in the Afternoon. The “cards 4 invitation “will soon be out.-

FROM ANDREWS, FEBRUARY 1, [UNKNOWN YEAR]
To Governor Woodruff
My dear Mr Woodruff
In an effort to raise money for this support and endowment of thiis free bed at the Hospital of the Good Shepherd. We are to have on the evenings of February 23rd and 24th an entertainment at the Alhamber called a "Carnival of Musical Romances." It is thought thtat a few words, from you, before this raising of the curtain, would add much to the interest of this occasion.
I venture therefore to ask, if you would graciously consent to give a short speech on either of those evenings?
In my quiet life, this free bed is near my heart which embolders me to make this request.
I am cordially yours,

My dear Governor Woodruff.
I have taken the liberty of sending to you one of the "Year Books," issued by the Womens Auxiliary of the Hospital of the Good Shephard and would like to call your attention, to the work of the "Free bed," supported by this Auxiliary - This work is very near my heart, relieving as it does. The suffering of those unable to pay, for necessary care and treatment - It is in constant use and supported by contributions, at present. We desire however that this bill should be endowed by the payment of five thousand dollars of which sum a portion is already raised.
Some of my friends have become Life Members of the Auxiliary, by the payment of one hundred dollars anhese sums all go towards the Endowment fund -
If I may enlist your interest in this cherished plan, it will give me great pleasure.

You know, we want to have you on one of the Ex: Com: of our Association. Please let me hear from you, if you will favor us? - Say "yes".- Also your name was missing from among the "slips" to give subject for discussion or instruction. Please, do so now,- one or more subjects. It will help!- I think, you are just as pleased as I am, that Jennie Merrill has

the position for Supervisor of N.Y. Kgtens. It will be a grand work she is doing! And that Mr. Meleney is also "in" for it,- all helps! Though it may not be direct work.-
I am very sorry, that you have moved to Brooklyn. All out of "selfishness" I say so for now I cannot go and see you! I know, I should not get "beyond the Bridge". Brooklyn seems such a strange place to find yourself in.

My dear Mrs. Meleney,
I meant to have written before; but have used my strength-only so lately returned to me-to a too large degree, I had to pay for it. And even now I feel miserable with a wretched sore throat. I see no-one, and do all I can to be well again by July 1st. Even now the Official Program has been sent to me-and I am delighted to find your name. To my suprise, no other ladies are going to speak,

If there are more than one flight, I am afraid, it will undo me for anything else.- Please, let me know, how long you are going to remain in the City; and if there will be a chance, after July 3rd, when the meetings end, of having the pleasure to see yourself Mr. Meleney for dinner? My dear Mrs. Meleney,
I was unable to see Doctor Wood earlier than last night, he says; his address has not been printed, as it really was only half finished; and is much pressed with business,other-wise he would have written and an extract for our report. He may do it yet- if we give him time.-I under-

It is all that can be done this time to give a sort of sketch of the year's work and no one can do that better than you, you dear, true ideal Mother! God bless you and yours.-You are right, we all have felt, that this was a year of development and growth. Truly, "in union there is strength"!-And speaking of myself-I do feel so strengthened by all of you my dear kinder-garten children, that it seems -a new life has come to me.-
[page 3]
Anna Harvey wrote to me, & I to her,-& i spoke about the same to Mrs. Peek and Mrs. Slade- and we all are of opinion, that you, dear Mrs. Meleney, should be our first Chairman. You are a graduate of longer years-and besides, Anna Harvey tells me, you did not occupy the Chair last Winter.- I was going to mention this at our last Ex. Com. Meeting, but having brought out so many new paint, thought, you might think me too forward,- and hence I proposed “begin like last year”. If only one had spoken, we could have

arranged it then & there. As it is, - it will not be too late- if you are willing. There are other reasons, that you should open the years' work: your sweet dignity & motherliness-will & must impress all. I think , there is nothing to say but you say 'yes' to Anna Harvey & to me. Anna Harvey is the truest, dearest girl, - so unselfish- and always for the best. I will write her by the same [Mail], & tell her, that I wrote to you, & explained it all. Anna Harvey will then preside at the November Meeting; and so on. - Mrs Hughes has not written to me. [page 2[
that comes from you and yours’ to me. You do not know, how happy it makes me!- By the by- I am afraid- I did not have George Lieber's name correctly put on the little [ring]. I believe- you spell it “Leber”- & I had it “Lieber”.- What a fine time we had at the Adelphi! I was so sorry that not all the members of my class could have
been with us. Six were absent.- I am so very much pleased with what I saw and Anna Harvey's Kgten and in Miss Roethhen’s class. in Boston at the J.K.U. meeting, they made me an Honorary Chairman of the Com: for the Froebel House in Blankenburg. Miss Wheelock wrote- that “an Appeal” had to be made- to collect more money, - and would not I do this ?- I responded, - and the A.M.
[page 4]
I sent an “Appeal” addressed to the Kgteners of the U.S. of America- 2 the Editors of the Kg: Review & Kg: Magazine. But- as I wrote to Mrs. Wheellock- I fear- it was too late to have this go with the June number. and in the June number it should be; For Froebel died June 21st fifty two years ago. Well! we must see.- Then I got a letter from Ashtabula, Ohio- A,7 Mrs Close- asking about Loiuse- Frankenberg’s right to be the first- one to established a Kg: in the U. States. She was. She opened her Kgten in 1858,- while Mrs Peabody went 10 years later to Europe to learn all she could about Kgtens.
[page 5]
And in 1868. Mrs Krige & her daughter Alma opened a Kgten & Tr: class in Boston- under the auspices of Mrs Horace Mann and Mrs Peabody.- I am so perfectly willing- to do such things; but- the time,- the time it takes..- You have no idea, what are number of lovely letters I have received since the Boston meeting, - of people I met there. Thus- I also have great joys! And I am so thankful that I am so well- and able- to make “ end meet”,
[page 6]
When will you leave for Martha's Vineyard? what a good program mrs. Harvey & Mrs Roethgen have.- my summer will be a “ busy” one - mostly spent in “ quiet preparation” for the fall- & the work awaiting me then. I am receiving already many letters- in regard to the Training Class. I am even now busy in the preparation of the new Circular for a one-year course, a two years course,-
[page 7]
and an Extension Course. This letter will be “ general” commencing Nov: !st & closing May 1st,- charges to be but $25.--. this will be for graduates, teachers, mothers- anybody who seeks information & deeper insight. What do you think of that?- Last Wednesday we went to be photographed. It is a fine picture.- Have you heard of the fact: that Laura Fisher of Boston has been engaged by the Kg: Association of New York to give 38 lectures on 38 consecutive Saturdays A.M..
[page 8]
-free lectures- on program work (of course, Miss Blow’s), And Prof. Earl Barnes will probably have a course of 32 lectures- also on Saturday mornings- at the Normal Colleges- under auspices of the Ass: Alumnae.
-Adieu! When I write to you, my dear “ daughter” Carrie Cait- I never know when to stop.-

My dear Mrs Meleney,
-Perhaps you have heard through Anna Harvey, that her lovely people, Mrs Willetts, who holds the position at the Trenton City High School, which is under Dr. J. B. Gregory- a friend of yourself & Mr. Meleney, I believe. Mrs. Harvey told me, that Mrs Willets was going to give- up her position,- & if I knew of a fine “Kraus girl” to send her to Dr. Gregory to apply for the position.
[page 2]
Right away I thought of able Mrs A.W. Dresser of Burlington, N.Y. She is just fine in her conception & also in the practical “ workings- out, of - both- kindergarten and connecting class work. she has held 10 years experience, has been very successful- & would make a fine “ training- teacher”. she also was a pupil of De Garmo. Mr. Kraus & I thought highly of her. I chose her- as you may remember- to go
[page 3]
To the N.E.A. Meeting at Los Angeles, Cal- to represent me- as President of the Kd: Dpt. which she did ably. I wrote to Mrs Dresser, & urged her to go to Trenton. mrs. Dresser now lives in Burlington, N.J. 226 . High Street.-
Dr Gregory received her well, asked her many questions, & seemed satisfied as to her ability, experience, &c. And said : “he would advise with Mrs Meleney”.-
When seeing mrs. dressers
[page 4]
“ card”- with Mrs. on it- he said that it was against the law to employ married women; & he said- he considered it an unjust-one, especially in this work where experience was so essential, Miss Dresser said he was “ very gracious”- the salary is only 600 dollars- but Mrs. D says: “ it is a good field to work- in”. Oh - & Mrs D. would be so happy to work in this field,- as it would lead to training more students, & would give scope for Mothers Meetings, - I also have written to State Supt Baxter about Mrs Dresser- to interest him in her. The “decorum” is now not yet decided- whether the can or cannot consider a married woman. Dear Mrs Meleney- can’t you.
[page 5]
And Mr Meleney put in a word for Mr Dresser? It would be a most kind act- in the case, - & I truly believe - that- if an exception were made- no one would ever regret it. Why - here in New York the same “law” exists- & yet - they do have married Kgtners of much younger age than Mrs Dresser. I wish - we could help her in
[page 6]
Getting this good position- or another-one.- Do - please- make a quick effort-else it may be too late.-
To-day, The Ex. Com. Meeting had its last this year’s Session at my rooms. I treated them with Strawberries & cream, and we had a “good time”. - We planned for all the Meetings of next year; and - at one of the meetings we want to

My dear Mrs Meleney,
The closing exercises of my class will be Friday, June 13th at 3 p.m.,- at the large Hall, Tuxedo Building- opposite the “ Hoffman Arms”. I write to say : Won't you and Mr. Meleney come- to give us your blessing- by your presence? Our exercises are not “ stately”.- quiet “ entrenous”- but very pretty music. And my graduating class have invited Mrs Harvey's “ class”- in loving courtesy to the “ Happy Day” spent at the “ Adelphi:”.- Perhaps you would like to bring Grace & one of your boys? I thank you & Mr. Meleney for the

My dearest Mrs meleny,
Thanks for your very kind assent to be our Chairman on this eventful first meeting, the first Anniversary of our “Infant Association”,- & if continuing to grow tis successfully, & suffer of no “diseases”- it will be in due time a strong “Grant-Association”- may - better than that, viz. A true “Woman Association”
[Page 2]
Of course, you will introduce Mrs. Hughes to the Association. Mr Hughes wrote that she would come from the Station straight to the Hotel. & he thought, would come in time. I am sorry, we do not know with what train she is coming-or we might do something to make her feel comfortable.-We have arranged, that the members of the Association can have a

Luncheon consisting of sandwiches, milk, coffee or tea, for 25 Cents, to be served in the Dining room of the Hotel up on the 10th floor. Will it not be nice to be able to be this united? I hope all will join; the price is small, & it will be quite sufficient for a Luncheon,-& no one will-I hope- rush away- & everything will be so much nicer. Rose Nathan has been to [active] in all this, that she deserves a “vote of thanks.’- I am going to keep my promise and have just finished my.

“proper”-& trust, it may interest you all, as I kept it “above the common level.” You must allow me 45 minutes. I know, this is much time,- but something good cannot be given in a shorter time- concerning my subject. I hope, you will frankly tell me, after the meeting is over, how you liked it, - & where it was wanting -
Good bye until Saturday. We will convenience promptly at 10:15A.M.- And, dear Mrs Meleney, I have taken the liberty to have two of my this year’s Class present; one is a cousin of Susan E. Blow, & she was 3 yrs ago in the Class, & has a triple to finish up,- & cannot be here after Christmas. And the other, Miss Ferris, went all through last year,- but by my advice is just taking some of the Lectures again.- And there are 3 or 4 graduates who wish to join at once, - true ones- & as a vote is to be taken for last year’s class, these ladies can likewise- be voted upon: Miss M Douglas, the Misses Sharpe, & I bought the other name. Good night!- it is [illegible]!- Your with love

My dear Mrs Meleney,
It was pleasant to receive your letter. You letters are always dear. I love to hear about you, the children- the “family entire”. - I am busy in preparations for my work. Last year it was “all strength”. This year: things go smoothly.- I saw Anna Harvey; she looks well.
[page 2]
Miss Anna Schliepofein has just returned from her trip to Europe. She looks “grand”- has grown young again ! and brings- oh- so many “news” from the Froebel- land- & people!- Then I had the pleasure of a visit from my Saratoga friends; and this- I have a “good time”! My [nerd] - Emma- whom I had [sinle] May 1st, when Maria went to Ireland, proves herself a “treasure”.- Then there is my dear Miss Kohler- so there loving, intelligent, talented & good!
[page 3]
Truly- I am thankful.- Thankful- for my many loving friends- the “Meleney family” in the first rank.- I am sorry, that Mr Meleney does not feel very well. Pray - do not past such an extra duty upon him- as “to call? When my work is started, we will do better- & you & Mr meleney came over- and dine with me.- I really spent a lovely & restful Summer; & the couple of works I suffered

With [Erysipelas] on my leg- is a “Something” almost forgotten. Of course- it was the reason that I did not go to Martha’s Vineyard- as I anticipated; but - my three “Summer’s” outings” , respectively at Bensonhurst, Saratoga and Lake george- were fine Saratoga I always enjoy; but the year I was the invited guest at St Faith’s School, which School is on the “Keilhan plan”, and is

Conducted by Mrs Eleanor Shackleford, daughter of the late Dr Shackleford (who used to have a cottage at the Vineyard)- and Mrs Beatrice Sands, a former pupil and graduate of ours 18 yrs ago. It is a “Home-School” Last Season they had 36. Young girls. Now - during the Summer months- about 18 girls were left- all of good- but poor families - aged from 18 month to 18 years,- The 18 years old , who

My dear Mrs. meleney,
You are always so very thoughtful in writing to me,-& I am- apparently- so little appreciative of your kind thought of me; but let me assure you,-your letters are just like “shining stars among the many letters I receive. The days are too short, to do all “I ought to do”; & hence you have, please, to be lenient with me, & offer take my - cover
[page 2]
“good will” for the deed.-I hope, your little give is quite well again. I know, your heart is “full” all the time- aside of the “needs & necessities” for the entire family. It is so difficult to avoid getting a cold these days.- I always wanted to ask you. “Would your brother, Dr. [Cait], ever have the time to give us a lecture on “points of health” for the kindergarten & little children under 8 years of age? I believe- that is his specialty?- Please,
[page 3]
Excuse this question,& regard it as “nothing”, if out of place. I am greedy for the members of the Association-I have re-read Mrs.[Bertt’s]letter,- & overlooked at the time, that she said. “Later on in the Season she would give us a lecture.- Please, bear these points in mind for our ”Meeting” on Tuesday. Of course, I shall be willing & do anything I can, if the Committee says so. I have had quite a “holiday” by not speaking of our last delightful Meeting, and to have only a very short-2o minutes-talk on Dec 18th.
[page 4]
It being our December meeting i.e. the Christmas Meeting, I also have a little fun in store for the members.-Thinking it all over, I believe, it may be best not to have an “open meeting’ on the 18th,-for two reasons, [viz]:
Because of the [Darraeh] who [so not] word “that he did not like it to be the public for various reasons; and that he had made this offer solely for me”.
Because of “the fun” I am going to have.-It would all give the wrong impression of our Alumni work to outsiders. Don’t you think so too?- Our January meeting could be a public, or “open” one.
And what do you think of my idea: Would it be well if
[Page 5]
if I were to write: the heads of prominent Kgten workers; for [inst]: Mrs F [Carlei] & Mrs. wakerman,&- who else? In Brooklyn; and Mrs. Dozier, Mrs.--- from the Teacher College Mrs. Haven, Mrs [Hancher],Mrs [Harris] & c. whoever we ^i.e. The Committee may decide upon, If I said: I to write them,- this was said merely: to hold out my hand, & show, that I, the “much abused Mrs. Kraus” is broad enough for the occasion. I see-your smile! Tell me frankly-am I right-or wrong? I am “teachable”.
Dear Mrs Meleney, your de-lightful account about your “family Ktgen” will not leave my mind. What a fine Kindergarten & true Mother you are!
[page 6]
Thank you, for “ending-up” The interesting educative account of the “broker dream” You should write this up, as an article, and send it to the “Kgten Review”- Anna Harvey visited any class last Wednesday and brought her Class. I had invited them for any final lecture on the II Gift. We had a lovely Afternoon. She has such nice girls in her Class- Are you ever in the City on a Monday or Wednesday at about 11 AM? And would you like to look in “on any class?- or in the Afternoon of either days?- I hope, I have not tired you with my long letter.

Dear letter, the contents of which I appreciate very much. - What a lovely “thoughful” birthday the dear child had. There is so much of the “one” family spirit in your household. The “date” when I take a “wee part” in the Mothers’ Assembly, will be Thursday, October 30th, P.M. My turn comes at 3:30 P.M. - and 15 mts are strictly to be adhered to. I have “boiled down” as much as possible; but - Miss Kohler “groans”- says: the best part, thus, is lost. I cannot be helped! The “speakers” are innumerable”. And as long as Americans “crowd”, - well- you know my views in regard to this. I accepted- in order- not to be “ungracious”.

Mrs Haven,- and one of my earlier graduates (now conducting a Public Sch: Kgten- & a very able young woman) Mrs Mary Wells - also will speak upon the subject of Kgten. Please, forgive my thoughtfulness dear
[page 4] dear friend! May blessing be on you & yours, and the new year see your little “girl-flower” increase in health & strength. - Even this minute reaches one the [Kg] Review of January, - & I read at once, rapidly, Mrs [Blows] “Danger-signal.” And if nothing else were in the pamphlet-it would be enough to make rejoice the hearts filled with the true “[Kglen Spirit].” She just expresses the - at present - so offer now- recognized “[Froebe]- idea” versus the “Herbert-views” so prevalent everywhere [illegible] years- in [Kglens]!- I feel quite happy about this article.- Goodbye! My dear mrs Meleney,
It seems to be a long while since I had a line from you; and not having seen, either- Anna Harvey or Mrs Pashley ( i.e. A. Harvey I saw a minute at our last alumni) - I have been unable to hear anything about you. I suppose you know, that the Executive and Advisory members of the J.K.U. you met November 8th, - called by Mrs. Putnam. I have much to tell you.- Mrs. Holmes from Charleston, S.C. also was present at that meeting, - & spent an evening with me, - as also did Mrs Putnam.- Mrs Hughes gave me a lovely surprise, to spend a morning in my “class” & remained the Afternoon. So did mrs Putnam. And Dr Merrill came to see my “class” at Play- over- at Tuxedo Hall. Then - my Extension Course takes
[page 2]
Much of my time & interest- and appeals to me- as I “ can go on”- further- with them. Such a fine “ set” of women take part in the same. You see- what a busy women I am.- Thank God- I am well; & that- together with being so busy- keeps me well.- I also had a great “ joy” come coming, buy a “ recognition” that a member of my family received from the Government abroad. Of course- this does not “ touch me”,- but it pleases me for the- one - who does not live on earth anymore.- Do you remember Mrs. Mary Joan Miller of Chicago? We have seen her frequently- at the JKU meetings. She is quite a remarkable young woman. Among other things- she is a graduate of the hailman Kg: Training
[page 3]
School; then became a student in the Kg- College under Better Harrison & Mrs C-r-o-u-s-e, & graduated from the College. Then she held position of Kg: Director in a first class Private School for nine years- at a high Salary. Also she studied “ some” with mrs. Putnam,- and also was student at the Chicago University,- of Dr Dewey also, - &c &c.- She is with me- sitting “ in line” with the regular class students- like a real “ learner”.- Then- another former graduate of ours ( 7 years ago)- who was the last 3 years under the “Program” regime in Washington DC.- she could not stand it any longer- came here- to “ refresh” herself & “ strengthen” herself with me. I directed her- to also attend Prof Earle Barnes’ lecture course at the Normal College; while Mrs. Miller ( who previously had taken a similar lecture course with Prof Barnes) - attends Prof Shaw’s lecture course - and also my Extension Course.- My “class”
[page 4]
This year is of particular Cosmopolitan character.- My thoughts often are with you, George Lieber- & all the family. I trust, Mr. Meleney has quite recovered from his ailing,- so that your “ dear” Motherheart is happy.-
I have seen very little this year of my old friends,- every body being very busy. But all the same- I am not “ alone”. The World is “ moving- on”.- I am living- out of “ class- work” a very quiet life. I need this- if I shall do justice, “ all- around”. - & remain strong.- I hope, though, you will be able to come & see me. We can make an “ appointment”,- some A.M. to see the latter exercises of class- work one morning,- & then take Luncheon with me.- My love to you - & your family- great & small.- Hoping, this finds you well, I am affectionately

My dear Mrs Meleney,
When one is in the stream- one has to be driven along with it- whether one like it - or not! - and so it has been with one of these last weeks. This is - indeed - a very, very busy would.- We missed you at our last Meeting of the Season- Saturday May 16th. It was the finest Annual meeting we have yet had. Every-thing passed off so smoothly, - insuch “natural” way.
[page 2]
And the “social” part was charming! I am so very much pleased to know, that you are going to be again in our Executive Committee. Next Season, I hope to have these Committee Meetings at my rooms, & then have the pleasure of seeing you more often. - I hope, the children are all in a good condition again. You “dear Mother”, - what was a heart - aches your family brings to you,- but also - what insurmerable joy !!!!

To-day I was up to University Hargto, to call upon Mrs Mac Cracken, - and- to look for a Broarding- place. A hard talk!-
Dear Mrs Meleney, will you & Mr Meleney give me the pleasure of the long promised visit- and dine with me? Either- Tuesday or Wednesday of next week, May 26th or 27th,- at a quarter before 6 P.M. Please, let me know. I have been looking forward to this so long,- & am so glad, it now can be realized- if suitable to both of you. - I know you will - both of you- enjoy Mrs Miller. R.S.V.P.
[page 4]
Miss Miller has been a delightful student in my classes this Winter.- She has decided to remain “Eat” next year; and we will tell you all about her “plans”, when seeing you.-
I was at the last Meeting of the Public School Kgtners,- and I cannot tell you, how happy I was- to see the love and admiration shown by the Kgtners to their Directors. -Anna Harvey- I rarely see. She is a very busy woman, - & I deem it wrong to urge her- to come & see me. Her own family- to absorb her greatly - since her Brother- in law’s death. Adieu! Dear Mrs Meleney.- With loving affection Yours

My dear mrs Meleney,
Your letter from this A.M. has just reached me. I was absent- when the boys called with the “ Horn of Plenty” in shape of that fine basket with fruit. When I returned- it was found in “ fine condition”, I thank you & Mr Meleney & the “ family entire” so much! you have done too much, do. Mr Meleney’s kind note
[page 2]
I enjoyed exceedingly; it was a beautiful letter- and as such “ a Christmas gift” and itself. I thank him for the same. I am happy- with you- that George Leber is well again.- I write to say : that- to-morrow A.M. I am “ going off” again. I cannot find quite the rest- here- I ought to have. I intend remaining away- until Sunday. Monday my work recommence has. It is pretty “ Sharp” work this
[page 3]
Winter, - but I enjoy it so much ! Every year- it seems- I love my work letter.- Miss Mary Jean Miller- a rarely “gifted” woman, - grad: of 3 other Train: classes,- a “teacher”, - and a Kgtner of 9yrs experience, - a literary woman, - & a “leader” in many ways- has given- up every thing- to spend the Winter in my “classes”- both- Training class and Extension Course. I am delighted to have her with them . She says,n that now only she begins to know what Kgten “means”
[page 4]
Mrs Putnam spent a morning with us; she told “my girls”, - that - coming to see me- was kind of a “Mecca” to her. Ada Mareen Hughes also was here; and also the Training Teacher from Quebec Normal Tr: Sch: and who declared: “She must take a years’s “leave of absence”- in order to come to me & join my classes.-
This is good to hear; it does my heart good! And you will be pleased, I know. I wish, I could see Mr Maxwell- & heave him see “my class”- Mr Meleney passed me in the Street- the other day; I called -out, - but he was absorbed in “thought”, - & then I did not bother him.- I wish you all a most happy “New Year”, - with no sickness-

My dear Mrs Meleney,
From day today I intended to write,- but- but- always “ something” came to hinder me. My “home” has been like a sort of “ pigeon house” - “coming” and “ going”. Among these pleasant visits was also the one from Mrs. Boone from Cincinnati, accompanied by Dr. Merrill. The two ladies arrived just- when I dismissed my “ class”; but they gave me the pleasure of taking luncheon with me, - & afterwards we had some interesting conversations.- I hear, that your hands are “ full” in caring for your children. Also about George Lieber’s “ fall” I heard” . all this needs a mother’s “ rave heart”,- & you have “ got it”! We all need “ gray Brave heart” more or less.- I trust, my letter of congratulations reach Mr. Meleney. Please, tell him from me : “ that I expected no answer. I only wished to express my joy in this event. I feel, that we have a “ good friend at the board of Educ: - in behalf of the Kindergarten.-
[page 2]
I congratulate you too- dear Mrs Meleney; for - this “new honor” touches you equally. I remember well- what Mr. Kraus said of mr. Meleney- even before you were united, viz:- “Note well- that young man will “ make his mark”,- and Ascend the ladder “.- I am happy over this- and truly rejoice in it.- at our last alumni meeting I missed you greatly. Miss Close shone like a bright light.- I am proud of her. The other kindergarteners also did well; and outside of the “ appointed” speakers- I induced about 12 to 14 other members to express themselves.- Mrs Anna Schleipstein could not come, - but sent her “paper”, which had some very good points. - Elizabeth Harrison also disappointed us, - went South for three month. - Then I proposed: to give the introduction myself; & I was told, that I made a fine statement of the “ideal”- attainable by every Mother.- My training class “prospers”, - & the students are in proceed of
[page 3]
“Fine development”. Monday Begins the second term.- Also my extension course is in an enlightened state of mine. With the members of this advanced class- I “ was” my knowledge & experience of so many years. The interest is great- all around; end my efforts are thus amply rewarded.- From Franlein Heermart, Pres: German Kg: Union, [Eisenach, Thuringen],-
I had a long & most interesting letter- about the intended Froebel- House & the Froebel- [Musann], - the “progress” and “recognition” of the Kg: made of education, &c. Of course, she is delighted in regard to the “generous” response from the part of American Kgtners. From hundred dollars were again sent over- as a New Year’s gift. February 2nd.- My letter must be finished - or it may never reach you. It is one o’clock in the night, - and I have just finished my lecture for the
[page 4]
Extension Course. I am busy- but- at the same time- I do enjoy my winter so much.- Do you remember Miss Mary Jean Miller of Chicago? She is a remarkable young woman; a pupil of the Hailmann’s,- of Elizabeth Harrison, of mrs. Putnam,- the University of Chicago,- had 10 yrs Kg: experience - also was a teacher with fine record. I want you & Mr Meleney to know her. And I wonder, whether we could not arrange a little dinner- party: it would be more “ democratic” then at the San Remo, - but I could promise a “good” dinner. What do you think about this? What “ choice of days” do you have?- She- Mrs. Miller- knows Dr. Maxwell, & Spt: Stuart- Dr Merril, - Mrs Curtis,- Mrs Fitts, - in fact - all the “prominents”. You would enjoy her. Her “rare culture” appeals to me. She is a students in my regular Training class, & declares to everyone: that now only she learns the A.B.C. of Kgten knowledge & understanding. She- also- is in my Extension Course.- Good bye. With loving good wishes for you & yours “heart- learners” Affectionately

My dear Mrs Meleney,
And with all the burdens you have been loaded with- I bring “ another”,- hoping though- it may help to “ to lighten” a little. The young ladies who will help to “entertain”- there is- first of all- the “ Easter Song” by the class of 1903, to “ break the ice”
[page 2]
As it were. - After that- you- call upon the young ladies- as you best think fit. I here will only give the names and the “ pieces of music” they will deal with.
Our “pianists” are : Mrs. O'Brien, class 1903:-
“Alice”- by Asher and
“Valse”- by- —
Mrs Harriet darling Foster will play: “The Pilgrims Chorus” by Wegner.
[page 3]
Mrs Stevenson will sing
“The Swallows” - by Cowen
“The Maiden & the Butterfly- “-
Frances Kohler (my own girl)- will sig-
“Love Song”- by Flagier
“Mary Song”-
—-----
Then- if my invitation has been accepted- there will be Mrs Herman Behrens- a first class Pianist- not a Kgtner; and Mrs Pardy- a “fine singer” also not a kindergartener. Both- if we ask them-will
[page 4]
Surely play & sing for us. And if there should be more need for entertainment, I note the following names:-
Goldsmith- Piano
Sherman- Piano & Song
Foster- Song
McGovern- Piano
Birmingham- Piano
Tiemann- Piano
Swartwout- Piano
The girls are very talented; & it may be pleasing- to have some “music” going- on - whole “others converse”. I want to keep a “joyous”,- but also a “tempered” atmosphere. You know- what I mean.
[page 5]
I trust- all will pars- off nicely. We wanted to invite Mr Hughes daughter; I believe- finally an invitation was sent through Mr Hughes, I wish , we could have had Mrs Hughes also. I enclose cards- for “friends” you may deem interested- at this late hour. Hoping to surely see Mr Meleney- I am with much love- Your

Mrrs Dorman’s report was- to speak Kgten fashion- “symmetrically rounded out”. And Mr Ossain Lang gave us a “great” lecture- we were all deeply moved and enthused/ I had no idea, he was such a “student of Froebel”! You missed a great deal!
I am beginning to prepare for my Summer-work,- & it pleases me much

My dearest Mrs Meleney,
Weeks have gone by- & I have not written to you! - After my “Summer’s work” was completed, - I grew so lazy - that it because an effort to hold a pen in my hand. I rarely enjoyed a vacation - in pure restfulness- so much at the Summer. If I were to begin to tell you of all my lovely experiences- widening my heart,
[page 2]
And extending “my views”- I would had to write you a Volume. I am truly glad of the Summer’s experience. My work at the University - though taxing my strength - were a real pleasure to me. Dr. Merrill - who came “out” to visit us one day - called my “class” the Banner class - as it was the largest at the University. Dr McCracken was not present; he & Mrs
[page 3]
McCracken were suddenly called - away to Bairet, where their youngest son was very ill with Typhoid fever. They are all home now, I believe. Many of the wives of the Professors became very much interested. It is lovely at University Heights. Such beautiful drives. I lived at a very nice boarding house, & made some lovely acquaintances. There were students from almost all over the Union. Four Training School teachers attended my lectures- & I made
[page 4]
Warm friends with them. And - if only you could have witnessed the feeling of all - against the “Program - work”! It would have done your heart good.- The enclosed Circular will tell you of one branch of my “Winter work”. If you have to give me any advice - do so, - it will be grateful received.- Though Anna Harvey & Miss Roethgen I heard a little of your life at Martha’s Vineyard. I suppose - you are still there - with Grace & George Lieber. I hope that this year I may see the little “resting”.

The boys are growing- I will hardly know them - when seeing them. I hope - they are all well now. I send my love & good wishes to the “family entire”. - Mr Meleney is kept very busy - as I see by the accounts of the Papers - of the tremendous work done in our Public Schools. - I have only just come home. Tomorrow we begin house - cleaning; & Tuesday my first

appointments are made for “interviews”. Did you hear of it - Miss Tompkins, Kraus graduates, who was in Cuba - as you may remember - has received the appointment of Kg: Training teacher in a Normal Sch: in Long Island. - Also I hear, that Dr. Poland, Supt: of Newark, is much in favor of the “Kraus graduates” It is for the Cause - that I am so glad of it!-
[page 7]
And now - “adieu” dear Mrs Meleney. - Annette Nolte from the West, & Joh: Schmidt - from your “class” - both - were at the University hearing my lectures. Miss Nolte has a very fine position in Chicago.-
With love - Yours always

My dear Mrs Meleney,
With all of the work- which seems to increase ever more- I could not write, much as I wanted to do so long ago. Saturday- I hope to see you at our meeting,- and to hear what interesting facto Mr. Meleney will tell us. It was so very good of him, to assent giving us the lecture- although he is such a busy man.
[page 2]
Even now- a little “ Easter greeting” was sent off to your address- for the dear children. I hope- George Lieber will like the Hare.- my vacation began today. And- after Saturday I mean to go “ out of town” for a couple of days. Mr. Hughes will again be in the city next week.- Also- Mrs Marie Shedlock- celebrated for her ability in “ Story - telling”
[page 3]
Is in the city. She is a very interesting woman.- my loving greetings for a “ Happy Easter” to you and yours- my dear Mrs. Meleney.- How I wish- you were living in New York! Brooklyn- is “ too far away” for me.- I feel well and happy!

My dear Mrs. Meleney,
I hope, you were not over-tired when reaching home ?!-It troubled me greatly that I had to keep you waiting so long, -but was unable to do otherwise- until noon. There was quite a “string of young Kgtners” calling, previous to your announcement, - and when all were gone, I asked Mrs Woodward to go to my Rooms with me, as I had kept her
[page 2]
her waiting too.- When you left, there came - soon after - Miss Florence & Miss Dorman, & they helped to write out “addresses” for the eleventh. Then I went up to my dinner,- and after that, the sick gentleman & his wife came to hear some music. At half past nine I was alone, -and - a little tired. Now I have rested for half an hour in the chair you occupied-when your dear "nose" looked so white! - Now I have yet a little work to do, but felt, I wanted first to write to you, dear young friend!
[page 3]
What did you think of me? Was I too enthusiastic saying at once, that I would join you at Martha’s Vineyard? Did my present feeling of strength mislead me ? and will I be able to assist you in the undertaking? After the - surely - trying time in Washington? I find, according the Program of the N.E.A. that my Paper will be due only on July the eleventh P.M.-and I may be unable to reach the Vineyard not before the end of that week. I have even now consulted the Alumnae. In view of all this, will not you & your husband [illegible] it all? The M.V. Institute commences.
[page 4]
Commences July 12th, I perceive. Thus I could only be of use to you for two weeks. I [calenlate] this: that I surely will have to remain a few days in Washington after my paper,-& being “about” I know, I shall need that rest [are] returning to New York and then I would need again a couple of days [are] setting out for the Vineyard. Remember, I am not your age! Even though endowed with a certain young feeling & [tenacity] of great “Will-power”.- The practice work as also the [games]- I would sustain & [illegible] & direct - just as much as you wanted me too ; but you would have to arrange “plan’, - and materials , &c. I do not want to be “head”,-only assistance.- Now I have said all.

That what we did not come to say yesterday, - and you & Mr Meleney must now decide: whether it may not be better to ask some one else, to be the perfect help to you, which you would need for the three weeks of such engrossing work. - If you would like to see me - I will give “class hours” of this week, - & time when I shall be comparatively free,
viz: Tuesd: Class 10 A.M. until 1:30 P.M- at leisure 4 P.M.- over
[page 6]
Wednesd: Class 10 A.M. until 4:30 P.M.-at leisure 11 AM. for 15mts to an half an hour,- & at 4 P.M. - Thursd: Class 10 A.M. until 1:30 P.M.- at leisure 3:30 or4 P.M.- Tomorrow, Monday, I also am at home towards lunch time, - and after - until 3 P.M.-
Dear Mrs Meleney,- I want to place things clearly before you, - hence all this explanation.- May 29th I will now close the letter written this for last night,-
[page 7]
Although, after re-reading it I find, it might have her greatly condemned. And thus I have to ask your leniency.
Your with yesterday was a delight to me. Your presence always gives me a happy feeling.
Affectionately your “Kindergarten Mother” and old friend
