Dear “Sister Caroline”
We missed you and Grace at our Kraus meeting on November 4th,. Your telegram arrived just as the quests arrived and was mad at the beginning of the meeting making us all realize that you were with us in spirit- [We were] thirty percent and twenty eight staged for luncheon - we were afraid it might be too cold or windy for some of the members to have the exercises indoors, the enclosed poem,by [Eloise Farr], was read at our luncheon and after luncheon we wandered about the building and our to see our tree- a healthy young [kin oak], well shaped and occupy me

One of the delightful surprises of the day was the [anomaly] of Dr Jenny Merriel. She is living with her nephew in Hollis and he bought her over. She has grown thin and led, her just as interested and alert as ever. She paid a beautiful tribute to Mrs Kraus which I wish some of our young people of modern education might have heard. She said she was starting her eighteenth year and greatly interested in the problems of the world. The same Kraus spirit prevailed and we all had a happy day

I met your Frank at the theater on Friday major and was glad to hear that you are all well. It was so will of Frank to come over and speak to us. Our Frank Club had occurred most of the second balcony and a four seats in the first balcony to see [Madrid] “School for Husbands” as that is how I happened to be there- I have grown to be such a [exuberant] that I seldom go to the city- we have had such glorious week ends all face we have enjoyed exploring Long Island in the Buick and have discovered many beautiful drives.

My dear Mrs. Meleney,
Indeed it was a most delightful party that Mrs. Wadleton gave us planned and carried out so perfectly! You and Miss Grace had a share in it and we all join in thanking you too.
The "Kraus girls" will long remember the Bronxville meeting, sincerely hoping that their hstesses were not overtired for they seemed to think of everything that could give pleasure.
I hope your evening party was a great success and that Dr. Meleney will gain steadily and both you and he will have a lovely summer, Miss Grace also.

Dear Mrs Meleney:
Perhaps you would like this copy of the article I wrote about Mrs Kraus for the Committee of Nineteen. I am sorry I did not have it with me last summer when you were preparing your paper.
College has opened with the largest registration we have ever had, so I have had quite a problem trying to make the building accommodate us. I hope you are well and that you were able to enjoy that wonderful September weather at the dear old Vineyard.
Miss Roethgen joins me in love and good wishes to you all.
Sincerely your friend,
Anna E Harvey.

Dearest Mrs Meleney,
Let me thank you for your loving good letter, & for sending your “Lawyer- son” Clarence, with the beautiful flowers. What a “dear” boy he is ! all of your boys are “dear”,- and your daughter also!- I was glad to hear such good accounts
[page 2]
Of all the members of your family, - Mr Meleney included. And you too, dear friend; - although seeing you but rarely- we are near you in our thoughts and with our loving good wishes.- I appreciate and love all my Kindergarten daughters- yet, some of them stand closer to me, - as for instance- you, dear Carrie. The greatest
[page 3]
The greatest blessing, however, has come to one- in having my beloved adopted daughter Emma; without her- I do not think , I could have “lived- on”- especially these last three years. - Now , having reached 80 years- I feel younger than for many years, and am “full of energy”.- The good news about Robert & his family- We were glad to hear. You are a blessed Mother “in your children and family relations.- This has grown
[page 4]
To be quite a letter, - & I wanted to write only a few lines. Thus one is carried away- “talking to a friend.- We are well; and we are “out” in the air- whenever ther weather permits.-

My dear Mrs Meleney,
Dearest Carrie Cait,
I had a letter from Anna Harvey, saying that you & yours were at the Vineyard. And we were glad to know, that you had escaped the great of the City.- I thank you for your letter from Mt. Holyoke. All you said, bespeaks the loving care & fore-thought for the many members of your beloved family. We trust, that you had “good news” from Robert

At the Border of Mexico & from his family. Soon - we hope - they will be re-united.- You are a happy woman, dear Carrie, - & the blessings of the children & your husband “record” themselves in you. - I was so glad to see you dear happy face at the Meeting and Reception on the Campus, when Mrs Hill was so kind & thoughtful in behalf of all,- and to both, Emma & myself. I was not at all

Dear & beloved Mrs Meleney,
My dear Carrie Cait,
I want to tell you of my appreciation that- both you & Mr Meleney came to honor our Association, & to say so many good & loving words.- I hope - you are well, & that no harm came to you- because of the effort to come all the way from your home. You, both, looked well & soo young- the expressions of happiness.- I am sorry , that I could not have had the pleasure of

Of having had you by my side; but - my ear trouble and the “giving out” so much vital strength - I needed to have my beloved daughter by my side- preventing her to sit among her class-mates. - The Luncheon was very beautiful, - and it was a sight to rejoice- seeing the happy faces. - I shall hope to see you before you go to the country! You have many cares, but also many joys. - I am

Well, and in the loving care of my daughter Emma, who loves & admires you- as also I do.- Some time ago you spoke about moving to New York City. It will be so good to have you here ! - My warm love & greetings I send to the members of your “family entire”, foremost to Mr Meleney- whom I always connect with the Knight on the Book- cover of Froebel’s Mother Play Book.- Hoping, that all of you

My beloved Kindergarten daughter,
Carrie Cait meleney,
Your birthday letter
Was received- giving me very great pleasure. The spirit enlivening all you said- is worthy of your elevated thoughts & feelings. I thank you- for all you said! And this leads me to the “connecting thought” of what you are and have done for your large
[page 2]
Family & circle of friends - you “blessed dear Mother”- Do not make an “effort” to come & see me - much as I should love to have you with me. We are near each other, - and “in communion” all the while.- All the members of your family are dear to me; as your children matured- my loving interest has grown. I hope- the “tonic” of the hills
[page 3]
Has really done you good, dear friend. And how happy Grace must have been - to have you with her for a while- “exclusively” .- Your “thought” of my father & another has touched me deeply. I am now seventy- nine years ``young”; and I cannot realize this! God’s blessing has been with me- all my life long! And that I have my beloved daughter Emma with me ! she send her loving regards to you!- And I send a heart
[page 4]
Full of love, & good wishes to you- for “renewed strength & health “- I have had many loving letters & messages for my birthday; and I have a “thankful joy” in my hears for the love of so many friends- God bless me with.-

My dear Carrie Cait Meleney,
Mt thoughts have been so frequently with you, - that your letter came almost - “as an answer”, - We are very, very sorry, and grieved, to hear that you have been - & are yet suffering; & the members of your family too. The “Grippe” is a terrible thing, Emma & I - we also have battled with the same since before Easter. Now- we begin to recuperate, - & it is goof to hear from friends. This will be the first real letter I am going to write. Dearest, - you will have to take “tender care” of yourself- so as to be th ejoy of the members of your large family. It is a real blessing. - your “invited” loving family. - Of course, you enjoyed reading about [Petluzze]- who is an inspiration
[page 2]
[Pestaluzze]- followed Rossau; - “to return to Nature.” Frobel was Pestalozzi' best pupil & follower. Mr Krays was a “true Pestaloggian” he knew Froebel, - & was a disciple of that great Man.- Froebel rose for beyond Pestalozzi’s ideal - in using objects, & His dominant ideal being “Self-activity”- he could not be satisfied with any educational process that ended with the development of the receptive & reflective powers. - Pestalozzi & Froebel inseparable The great [Disturbing] propagated and advanced both.- I will not enlarge upon this, -as you are aware of it- just as much as I am. - Do not trouble your dear mind- that you are unable to come to New York. We know- you are “with us”, - and - we are “with you”.- We love you- & - of course- miss you
[page 3]
You do not say anything about dear Grace! How you must miss, having her with you.- May 10th. I will finish this letter now. - From the Hughes family, Toronto I have had no news lately; the last I heard - was an about agonized letter from Mrs Hughes- because of her beloved San Chester- who joined the Army in Canada, - & has gone- we believe - with the rest “to the front”. Laura is the “comforter” in that dear family.- The War is “terrible”. God give us peace !- “Peace on Earth- to men of good will I pray .- The beautiful Park is in its glory - of the new “green”. - We send our love & good wishes to all the members of your family.- Good bye- for to day. Affectionately- always your Kgten Mother

Your letters always give me joy! - I am truly sorry to hear from you- how persistently and seriously you have been troubled with bronchitis. It proves, that you have to be very careful.- I too, have been suffering sincerely; but - I am glad to say- that I am “about & doing”. For several day- I was unable to utter a word. However-
[page 2]
I was able to tell a short Christmas story to a delightful crowd of little children.- Dear Mrs Meleney- we had a charming Christmas festival last Saturday. I know, you would have enjoyed it as much as I did ! A great charm- to me - was, that a number of our former graduates - now married - had brought their children ! Oh !the happiness shining from their faces.-
Of course, we shall be delighted to have you call some afternoon, as you say, - and also to meet Ms. Tappen .- The best of [illegible] ideas- as I read
[page 3]
About them,- or as our friend who hear her, & even attended her classes in Rome- are derived from Froebel. Her saying: if giving the children time “to think”, - has been compromised in Mr Kraus saying : “Make haste slowly”. Surely- Froebel- following Nature- allowed dur time for development & growth in all things! - It does me always good- when you say : “that you love to think of the days when I was in the midst of my children. Dear Carrie - I am trule blessed in my “Kgten-Daughters “love”.- When you are well again
[page 4]
We shall hope to see you in our new home.- We often think of you- & your large and happy family circle; Christmas joys will truly surround you and Mr. Meleney.- Our “good wishes” go out to all of you.-

Dear “Carrie Cait”. Your loving greeting and “good wishes” came early on Saturday. I thank you and yours for your loving remembrance. Of course, I missed you among the “daughters” of our Association. We had a good Meeting, and an interesting- one. Though differing - the individuality of each -one.

My dear Mrs Meleney,
Only “to - day” I can find a restful time, to write. I wanted to do so- since our last Meeting. The Hall, on that day, was unfortunately so cold, that - I fear- we all have suffered from it.- Truly - you have grown to be a “young woman” again! It was delightful to see and to hear you. You seemed to be so [brine] full of “Motherlove”. It warmed everybody’s hear!
[page 2]
I only wish, that somebody could have “jotted- down “ what you said; but then - it could not have given the right impression! For it needed to see you- while speaking! Thank you - for coming and speaking for our Association!- It was quite a disappointment, that you were not present at our “Reunion Luncheon”. It was a beautiful sight- those 90 “Kraus girls” - Mrs Blow from 40 yrs ago
[page 3]
Up to the young girls of my present class! And - the surroundings were so beautiful- at Hotel Majestic! Yes, dear Carrie Cait - I missed you!-
When the weather grows warmer, you must not forget to “look in” at our this year’s class - at 11 A.M. on a Thursday- when “at play”. - I hope, you may also be able to attend our next Meeting!-

My dear Mrs Meleney,
It is “ Election- day”,- and consequently- we had no session in ”Class”.- I wanted to write to you oh so many times; but you have no idea all of the work, trouble & tribulations we had to dispense and with. It would land too far- to attempt writing about it.- It was a pleasure - to see you at our last meeting, & to have you by my side at luncheon; although that gave me not the satisfaction- as
[page 2]
I could have had you all “ by myself” myself.- I know, this sounds rather selfish! but then- I had not seen you for such a long- long!- I rejoice in my heart, to see you looking so well- and so happy. Surely- it is verified- that I always called the Meleney family : “ the happy family” family. Surely- your reward is on hand- for your ever-loving, faithful devotion to your family! Those Splendid boys of yours!
[page 3]
How should I love to see you then!- I am busy- from 6:15 a.m. until 1:30 a.m.- and- with my “ simple” life,- I am well & “ feel happy”. my Emma has a part in that. What a golden heart she is!- dear Mrs. Meleney, I was and am extremely interested in the final “ I'll come” of who is to be a supervisor of Kgtners of Greater New York. The “ news” about it, I heard,- were uncertain I thought, by what doctor Maxwell wrote many months ago,- that- in appointing mrs. Curtis- the question was settled. But no- it seems not to be so !
[page 4]
Mrs Glidden of Pratt- seems to be on the “eligible list”, - and I have taken the liberty , to address Mr Meleney about this. I consider her to be quite a remarkable woman; true to Froebel, & yet not “set”! Her preparation & learning , & experience also are remarkable. - Yu & Mr Meleny know, what I think about our able Anna Harvey! And I fully had hoped and expected- that she would come in consideration! Has she applied? Or does her modesty keep her back?
[page 5]
I feel so “ helpless” in My Desire- to have the right person in the right place. When last I saw Anna Harvey- she did not express herself to me; and she appeared to be so devoted to Adelphi College! What will be the “ outcome” of it all ! Mr Maxwell's opinion- about Kgtens- I am sorry to see in the Papers. Surely- he does not, - can be
[page 6]
Mean: that he considered the Kgten as an “intellectual preparation? Froebel meant it for “character building” - more than anything else! And just that is needed now-adays- when crime has because so “broad -spread”, - as the Papers tell us daily. Childhood must be encompassed in “Love”. And- also ! the fault of having not the right good results- can be found in the many poorly trained Kindergarteners! It seems- that Music is
[page 7]
The “golden key” for position in Kgtens, - and - examination of higher grades, - where as the true knowledge & idea of Kgten Methods & Philosophy - receives the lesser attention- I hope, - you will pardon me- for this “outburst” - that had better not have been written down. But- to you , my dear & “ture” Kindergarten- daughter- it all came- “natural”, - as ever often formerly we might have talked the over- face to face, - and “heart to heart”
[page 8]
Do “Tear” this letter, - & “forget it”. - My letter to Mr Meleney is a “formal” one- but “sincere”. - And - oh! How I should love to say “my say” about my beloved & able Anna Harvey! You know that; & you and Mr Meleny , both , have the like faith in her.- To- morrow, I understand- the “decision” & “appointment” will be made ! May the able men, who hold this in their hands- by guided by over Father in Heaven- for - it is somewhat a question of real or woe of “future generation”. - My love- to you & “yours”. God bless you all ! - I feel, as if I belonged a little bit to you ! - Affectionately- Yours as ever,

My dear Mrs Meleney,
I wanted to answer your letter- dated Jan 20th, long ago. However, together with my many duties, - and the “bad cold” afflicting my chest throat, & vocal cords, prevented me from many things. - I was told, that you were in a much better physical condition- & I rejoice- that this is so. You mention in that letter, that : the day of the “Reception” given to Mrs Riggs- Jan 17th - was Grace's Birth-day! I always placed.
[margin]
I have received an invitation to address the J.K.U. at the first public meeting, The Evening April 25th - Cincinnati - But- I think- having this miserable “cold” - I shall have to decline the Rumor.
[page 2]
Date of Grace’s birth in the “Month of May May”; for - you & Miss Cait visited me after Mr Kraus’ death, when I was not yet in the “old” Apt,- & that was in April- I think- for Mr Kraus died in March- I had a lovely invitation for the Reception- both - from Mr Mabie, Pres: of the Ass’n, & from Mrs Patter Russell, Chairman of the Committee. This severe Grip - attack - did not permit me to “leave the house.” I was very sorry for it, because I do admire Mrs Riggs . I consider her a most talented woman, & admire her truly. I have not been to any entertainments; nor have I invited as yet any of my friends.-

We are sorry, not to have seen you at our monthly meetings. They were small,- as that Kgten Ass’n “ absorbs” them Saturday mornings, the Kgtners of that Ass'n Being obliged to attend their meetings- being accredited for doing so,- this I was informed.- You are wise- to abide your time! Your “ turn” surely will come again! -I never think of you- as being idle. That is not in your nature.- How busy you must be- in taking part in the lives of your boys,& their work. To think of Frank being a “ master” in a school far off in Florida!- it is nice, to hear something about mrs. Hughes of Charleston; & did Frank see her adopted boy-& how he is- the darling of his precious mother. To me, the Charleston experience- also is” unforgotten”.-
[page 4]
I had a call from Miss Thomkins, who applied for Dr. Merrill’s position, & who also had a “ talk” about this with Mr. Meleney: she said, your husband had been encouraging. Shirley, she has energy. She speaks lovely about our Anna Harvey. The ladder told me, that she had made no application!.- I hope- the right person will be appointed! none who believes in “ that program work”- that kills the Frobelian spirit! it would mean a “calamity” for the Kgten .- Well , I must not now write about that ! - GFive my love to the members of your family!- Do you ever pay a visit on a Sunday afternoon? I am “at home” at 3p.m. then for my friends- until 5 o’clock! However, you as well as I, - will have to await “fairer weather”. -
Emma thanks you for your loving message. She is so true & dear as ever ! I love her dearly !- My love to you, dear Carrie Cait.- Ever yours affectionately

My dearest Mrs Meleney,
Truly- my heartaches - to know you ailing this long! This “Easter-time” is so full of thoughts of “resurrection”; and thus it may prove to you - that you may rise above all the ailings in renewed health and strength. This Winter has been so full of ailings to alomost every day. May this beautiful easter - tide be the beginning
[page 2]
A “new life” for you!- The change of weather has been almost too sudden- for us poor mortals. I would feel satisfied were it to remain thus; for warmth always agree with me.- From our windows - we can see the “new” green grass. Soon- the trees will show also signs of new life. I am thankful , that the Winter has not harmed me. I could do all of my work with greater ease
[page 3]
Ability & pleasure- than ever before. My class is a small-one, - but a lovely one. I believe, I told you this already in another letter. Tuesday, March 29, we reassure our work with the class. - It is so often - I think of you & your family. What a blessed Mother you are ! - I had a letter from Ada Mareen Hughes. She is so able and true! We are busy for “action” in the Committee of Nineteen, J.K.U.; but - it is all yet much tangled, & it may take years- until the path is clear- which- to my idea- can only be brought about
[page 4]
By a “return to Froebel”.- And- about our Round Table Dinner” at the San Remo- I will tell you later on. It is interesting- to see the different Representatives, as there are: orthodox, radicals , & the various graduation- take dinner so amicably together,- showing such a “friendly spirit”. I rejoice in this,- & see in it “a great promise for the future”. - My letter has grown long, - while I wanted to send you only renewed Easter- greetings and loving good wishes.- The “Meleney family” is always connected with Froebel;’s ideal of a family. Love to all ! and God bless you all! Affectionately

My dearest Mrs Meleney,
I fear- you are still suffering- because we have not seen you at any of our Meetings- nor heard from you! It grieves me, that this should be so. Spring is coming,- and the fair weather may chase away all pain. This Winter seems to have been extra full with bad cold & other ailments; but I cannot

Be sufficiently grateful that I have been well. My life is a very bust one (& worksome- one)- - but I love the work, which, tother with quiet & simple living, keeps me well. - My “class” is a joy to me; the students consist of able intelligent & talented young girls. They are full of the “true spirit”. My class is but a small- one this year; but a desirable - one. And my daughter Emma

My dear Mrs Meleney,
Truly sorry I am, that your strength has not returned so speedily as you hoped. However- you are growing stronger-& that is a blessing. Last year- I passed through similar struggles. The love for “ my work” helped to make me strong again; and- the love for your family- well make you strong again! think of it! what a great work you have done- & are doing- in bringing up to manhood those dine sturdy, intelligent boys- & your Gracie to a realization of “true Womanhood”. - Pray- save your strength - & do not force anything- by coming to our next Saturday’s meeting. The pleasure great- to see so many of our

Graduates and friends. It seems, as if my heart within me-wa actually “enlarging”; & it burst upon me- all of a sudden- what “happiness” my whole life had held! God bless them all - the earnest, loveable, fine women- young and old! The “devotion” personified in them- for the Course of Childhood- within Friebel’s beautiful “nature-laws”. And I feel so truly grateful- that I have been permitted to be be the “month- piece” of Froebel’s thought, - of his philosophy & practical “working- out” of his ideas!-

Friday evening, December 10th.- It was impossible for me- to send this letter earlier. Dear friends- came & went- & kept me quite busy. - Anna Harvey was “delightful”. So were “others”. All that was said- I placed it in the “Altar of Froebel” - to when it was all “due” ,- as also Mr Kraus, to Fran Froebel, Dr Wichard Lange, From Rouge- to my little Kgten children, the Mothers, - & my adult Tr: class pupils; I learned from all, and only thus I developed & grew. I am thankful- to feel so vigorous & young; am so happy “to be at work- as usual.- I was glad to shake hands with dear Mr Meleney. Many of my- now grown-up- Kg: children were present.- My dear love I send to you & pray, that you may soon be well again.- Affectionately Yours-

My dearest Mrs Meleney,
Your loving good letter touched my heart. Thank you for the same. I looked for you on Saturday, & was quite a little disappointed not to see you; but I understand- how very busy you are in many ways. At least- I shall hope to see you & your family- on that eventful December the second !- It is so lovely in the dear former pupils, that they
[page 2]
Want to celebrate my 50 years of uninterrupted work! God surely blessed me - that I could work thus for our great Course, interrupting the sound ideas of educating the young ! I cannot realize - that half a Century has passed- since I began. It all seems- as if it were “only lately” when I commenced. All is so vivid & lively in my mind!- What a blessing it is- that you, dear friend, are strong & well again - & can take such active work to benefit the people!
[page 3]
I thank our Father in Heaven, that such as you have been my students.- My “message” last Saturday, was “on the Temperaments of children”, and of the duty & necessity of Mothers and Kgteners (all Educators) to take an insight of these. It was a lovely night- & filled my heart with love & happiness, to see so many of “my girls”, - & among them so many of “former classes”.- I thank you for all your “good wishes”, dear Carrie Cait! Once in a while- I must call you thurs!- I love you !-
[page 4]
Your family- is - in my mind always a “model family”. I thank you, for telling me about your children. - This year- I have but a small Training class. I desired it so; for - much o my time & strength will be needed- because of the golden Anniversary- & preparations for the same. My daughter Emma shows “splendid growth”. The purity of Mind- found in her- is delightful.- I pray- you will all “love her”- for the worth of her own self! - WIth love to you & yours

Such glorious accounts have reached me- about the delightful & helpful lecture you have given to our alumni association. I suppose- you could not let me have a copy of the list of picture books & other books- given to the Ass’n? I deeply regret, that I could not have been present, but - I did not know
[page 2]
How to manage- as the tickets were in my possession for weeks already!- I think, the pre-arranged & announced, that we know beforehand.- Almost all of my students were present. They are a very interesting “ set” a girls. The three girls- who were “ voted in” for members, received today their Diploma. They are- all three very intelligent & lovely girls,- & have taken hold of Froebel’s Methods - prove & true- in a delightful & encouraging way.
[page 3]
When the weather turns to be fairer, I hope- that we may arrange to see each other.- I am well- & as active as ever,- Nay even more active. My work is my joy! and- the freedom that has been mine- all my life long- has made me so strong in it,- I believe. Many things I do, or “ hold on to” make clash with the “ school regime” but never with Froebel.
[page 4]
Your boys- in College & School- as also your sweet daughter- are a source of joy & happiness to you & Mr Meleney ! You (both of you)- have tell me about them, is of great interests to me, - & always will be. - Adieu- for to day! My dearest Mrs Meleney,
I am so thankful to know, that the operation you underwent- has been a successful- one one. Now be doubly strong- & go mainly well. And I trust we may soon see your precious self. I did not know if this- until your letter arrived. You have such fine causes of being happy- & my heart always ached for you- that a shadow should have

Rest ( so to speak) on your precious, blood life. You have been a brave woman! God bless you- dear dear Carrie Cait.- We had a happy morning of the opening of our meetings- last Saturday. Harriet Littig- the new president- had arranged everything well. Perhaps? you may be with us at our October meeting! Mr Ossian Lang is going to give us an Address.- Our visit to “The Land of the Sky” has done is- oh- so much good. I feel, as if I could do “ double work”. The touch with “Nature” is so grand. And the - to have “my Emma” with me for a companion
[page 3]
Instead of - as in former years- to be “alone”! Emma is “dear”; & I love her ever more. She is devoted to me. The Class-work has commenced - with a lovely “cultured” set of young women; and I we are kept very busy.- My sincerest sympathy I send to Mr Meleney & to you & the children in behalf of “Grandma Meleny”.- In spirit of “science”- changes will take place. It is “Nature's Course”. - In June 1909- it will be fifty years- since I graduated as Kgtner!
How the time seems to fly! I feel- as if I had been but “ recently”- in spite of the many years that have gone by.
My thoughts are often with you & yours. Last year- I had to keep away from my friends- & save all my strength. For my loved “ life work”; & I was rewarded- and having done a good years work with an almost “ ideal” class.- God be with you ever more, my dearly beloved kindergarten daughter.- We hope- to have you for one of our meetings.
Affectionately yours

My dear Mrs Meleney,
I have just returned, a few days ago, from the Summer School, NY University- where I have been living among the “ girl students” in the Gould Hall, & giving daily- during six weeks, 5days per week- two lectures! this did mean “ work”. However- I enjoyed it all very much. Meanwhile you have heard already about the Summer
[page 2]
School- thru Mrs Gertrude Conrsen- a charming young woman- when attended my lectures during one week. She was a visitor of the Misses Hall from Pittsburgh, Pd, who “captivated” my heart, & interested me highly. - I feel a “wee” but tired, and am resting here for a few days- preparatory to our “vacation - excursion” to Mars- when we intend to remain until end of September.
[page 3]
It is long- since I have heard from you,- end seems “ ages” since I have seen you! are you “ coming back” to New York or Brooklyn? or are you tempted- for “ the boys” sake to return to the northern regions? we miss you here greatly. You were needed at the JKU ! you do not realize what an important person you are,- & how far your influence “ goes out”! - Mr Meleney I have
[page 4]
Seen “all the year round’ only once, & that was Mar 4th at our Reception held in honor of the J.K.U.- There is much to be told! I almost had had in mind not to go to “Mars”,- but instead to send my straps to Cottage City; only- if I remember right- there is not Hotel. And- at the place where I stayed the last time - I could not make - up my mind to go to.- And

I saw her last- the night before we went to University Heights, when she was on of the important persons to “sign my testament & best well”.- I hope, she take a real good vacation, which she needs after her heavy work ,- and in preparation for “the work to come this Season. If I remember right, she spoke of going with Nellie Roethgen of Martha's Vineyard. And- may be: she

Carried - out her plan. Should she happen to be near you, - will you give “my dear love” to her ? Perhaps she may like to write a line to me? My loving greetings I send to all. - We are

My dearest Mrs Meleney,
It is quite a while ago- since I wrote. This Winter has been avery busy one, to much so. It was- however- all “ for the best”- the education of our children- the “ lifting up” to a higher and better standard. was their success- or not? The “ Good will” was there- on all sides- though“ failures” may have occurred
[margin]
Mrs. Blow & I were given such a “ poor” halt to speak in- “ badly managed” that we could not be heard!
[page 2]
From Mr. Meleney- No Doubt- you well have heard some of the reports about The jku. The “ Preparatory work” was the hardest. The convention- week was full of Interest, a pleasure- though also attack. To me- the Monday meeting of the committee of 19- gave me a “ great night” in all the “ ups and downs”, - the Pro and Contra of the conversations & the Liberals.
[page 3]
Each- one stud staunchly in her place- and although there were strong discussions- the spirit remains “ friend”-. Miss blow had been with me- the Sunday previous to the meetings. And- we met on “ the”- although there may be some differentiations. The “Program” for instance- for which she clings yet.. she also subjected to me one of her papers; and then leave you together the exhibition of the kg: work at the Museum of Nat: History- not altogether and “ ideal one”

May 19th: The days are so “full” - that this letter could not be finished and sent.-
On the 2nd of May I had 16 of my former pupils at “ round table dinner” in the Blue Room of the hotel- in honor of mrs. Hughes. We talked & thought of you- dear Carrie Cait Meleney.- Mr. Meleney came- to shake hands- at the reception of our association gave to the members & Friends of the JKU, and when I, Mrs. Hughes, and Patty Hill- were the- ones “ to receive” and “ shake hands” hands. It was all so beautiful. Dr. and Mrs Balliet also were present. Coming and going- there must have been nearly 1,000 ,people.- Harriet Littig & and Anna Harvey- were the “ mainspring” Springs. How I longed for you. I have been- & and yet- so very busy..- I wanted to write & thank your children for their loving letters- but- “ it was beyond me”! I love you all- so dearly- even though I did not write.

My dearest Mrs Meleney,
This morning we had our Christmas tree in Training class. It was such a happy morning. I love the girls; and. To watch their development- is highly interesting. I always have the woman in the them- in mind; and not the “teacher”. I know, that my conception
[page 2]
Of doing this- was in Gorebel’s mind- all the while. Sometimes this “hard work”;- hardle- than - were I top think only of their future Public School examinations.- But- I did not want to write about this. Pardon me- my “pen” & my thoughts- were running off together.- We have just packed a few remembrances for you & yours.
[page 3]
These are “modest gifts”, - but given with a heart full of love for you - my dear Kindergarten daughter, and your children. I wrote to Mr Meleney- to ask for your address, which I had mislaid; but found it- & am sorry to have troubled him. May your Christmas by a merry and happy-one to you all; and the coming new year- one of blessing
[page 4]
My thoughts are so often with you, - and I should be so glad, to hear from you, and about your life- up there in the “colder” regions”. I imagine, it must be- like in my old home. Cold- being- Ice & snow!.- I have been very busy; and there were so many “obstacles” to overcome, this year, - here at the Hotel; and I had to abstain- seeing my frends about me- as was my pleasure in former years. Did- things are sadly changed; and often the thought comes: “would it not be better for me- to go away from the Hotel San remo- to find a place - where to live in a more peaceful way? I caught a very bad cold in November- owing to having not sufficient heat in my apartment. This has been remedied- by having a second Radiator
[page 6]
Put-in. The rooms are warm now, & that is one comfort.- We have had very full & pleasant meetings in our Ass’n. I gave the lectures during these past three months. Next month, January will be our social meetings. I wonder, if Mr Meleney- as one of our “Honorary Members” could not spare a few minutes to “look- in”? And see the happy crowd of girls.- And in February - we shall have
[page 7]
A lecturer on “Mimic”; and in March- Dr McVonnel of Teachers College will lecture ; and in April- probably Mr John Fretwell, who is such a stanch advocate of Froebel. - Miss Hallagher is again the Chairman of our Committee; and Harriet Littig is “a very treasure”. - Mrs Kennedy lost her mother- lately. Thus is life- sad & happy!- My Emma is developing wonderfully; she is quite a help to me- in “class”- for she is intelligent- & skillful with her hand,- & a good marriage. She hold you & Leber George in great affection
[page 8]
I hope, that my package will reach you “in time” for Christmas day. I tried hard, to send it off before; but- the days were not long enough for all I had to do,- and it usually was one to two hours after midnight- ere I could retire. And & A.M. I am “up “ again.- I hope - you feel well, dear Carrie Cait. If thoughts & “good wishes” could help you- you would be in “blooming health”. Adieu! My Love & good wishes to all. My dearest Mrs Meleney,
Ere leaving the City- I must send you a few lines. It was so lovely- to have - both, you & Mr Meleney present at the graduation of my students! Only it grieved me, to find you “ailing”. Where did you get that cold? I fear- you are over- taxing your strength “somewhere”. You are
[margin]
I am very busy. Pardon the “strand’ at this letter.-
[page 3]
So conscientious as so “self-forgetful”- that this can come easily aboust.- And - I cannot hear “the thought” of your going away next winter- so far away! If I were Carnegie- I would give Mr Meleney annually $10,000;- or - if I were “President” of the U.S.- I would make a “law” for extra Salaries to men of “large families”
[page 3]
Like your family is.- Alas! The time of “wishes” is no more! - Dear Mrs Meleney, I fear, I offended Mr Meleney by my eagerness- in my statement: that there young earnest graduates would do letter work - if now employed- away- from the [direct]” and influence of “Program-work”- and that “Mechanical” work- of which the Kgtners- mostly- are so full- now - a- days
[page 4]
The Kgten is taking “peculiar aspects” in some quarters; it is - I might say- like Hamlet- with the personality of Hamlet “left out”. There is a great amount of realism introduced into the work of the children- in many Kindergartner Everything being brought out- so “literally”. And - I suppose- that this is “the reason” you have often disparaging sentences spoken about Kindergartens.
[margin]
It did me good- to hear Mrs Hughes talk to the girls.
[page 5]
-But- I will say no more. I am so full of “what it ought to be”; and - therefore- things affect me more keenly. Certainly- we do have some “good” and “true” Kindergartens. But - what do “a few” in the balance of the “many others”. - I had an opportunity to talk many things over
[page 6]
With Ada Mareen Hughes- as also I did- a few weeks ago - with Mr james L Hughes. They have seen & do served much!- Pardon me- for dwelling upon this point so long. I won’t do it again.- Wo’nt you write a love- to let me know how you are ? & if Mr Meleney has forgiven
[page 7]
Me? By what I said- no “attack” upon the Board of Education was meant. No- surely not Mr Meleney is staunch”. And I admire Dr Maxwell.- My Love & greetings I send to you- my dear Kgten daughter,- as also to your “family entire”.

My dearest Mrs Meleney,
Your visit was a great joy to me; & I was very sorry to see you go! I looked after you. You walked away so lightly- like a young girl! Your visit did me much good. It is so gratifying- to have a friend- to one may speak “ unreservedly”.- I cannot bear to think,
[page 2]
That you will be so far away- next winter; but I can see all the reasonable this of this sacrifice- in behalf of your children. Only I wish, I could find a reliable person for you, to relieve you of the burden of the “ household”- My class will graduate June 18th,- and I hope that you and mr. Meleney will be able to be present. I will send you further notice, as

soon as “ ready” . Then I shall be very busy; and to avoid “overtiring” myself, - shall devote the intervening time only to “my class” I am very sorry, to part with them. They are not only a gifted & talented set of girls, - “brin-full” with the fine Froebelian “thoughts” & “law”; but - they are truly lovely girls.- My love I send to you and yours.

My dearest Carrie Cait Meleney,
Your letter ( special) reached me even now- 5 p.m.- Your Letters always go so straight to my heart,- touching a cord- that few are able to touch. Your letters give me always the feeling of some “ family- can connect”,- some “ home” feel feeling. I, my dear kindergarten daughter.- Indeed, I missed you this morning. We had a lovely morning. There were a “ good leave” number of our association president. Rev. Mr. Sill made an appropriate speech. And I, too gave a short address,- reminding the members of this being the 10th Anniversary,- and that this was so closely
[page 2]
Connected with Mr Kraus’ “home- going”,- & that this Ass’n had been founded “in Memory of him”, - And then I dwell on some of the vital Froebelian principles, - reminding the members, - that for there we had ever to stand up - in order to be “true” to the “reason for being” of the Ass’n.- Then followed an enjoyable social hour. Several Members of our Exceutive Commitee had brought on “over-flow” of delicious sandwiches; other “limonade”; & I came with my usual contribution: three chocolate Tarts- each with an “inscription”.- Even Mrs Annie Bond from Conaan Com. had come !- And- I was happy!-
[page 3]
I proposed at our meeting two new honorary members: Mr James L. Hughes, & Mr Clarence E. Meleney; & unanimously they were approved with great applause. I hope, Mr. Meleney will receive this small token of appreciation “graciously”. As I told the audience: I regard Mr Meleney as one of our stanchest friends & advocates of the Cause we have espoused.- Dear Mrs Meleney, - as I cannot call “in person” to often my loving congratulations & good wishes in person for this 21st anniversary of your Wedding-day, - I send “my shadow”- taken last week- when I had to accompany my students to the
[page 4]
Photographer’s - for the “Class-picture”. May our Father in Heaven bless you & yours ever more,- to male you “happy life” ever happier. Yours’ is - to my mind- an ideal family.- I shall be delighted to have you come & visit the class, - and to remain for Luncheon. It will be the one “rare chance” of having you all to myself! Of course, your precious boy George Leber - is included in this invitation. And, if Grace can be spared, she would be an additional pleasure to me. Only, I have no attractions to offer- for children; - my rooms are but “small quarters” since I removed from the 9th floor.- The only day- this coming week- when I am sufficiently “free”- is Friday
[page 5]
-May 25th;- and the week after- is “packed full” with work.- We are nearing the end of the term. But- Friday, May 25th, I shall be delighted to see you. Class opens at 9:15 A.M., - and you are “welcome” at any time. Please, let me know- if this will suit you.-
With an ever “growing” love to you and yours- I am ever - with loving affection- Your Kindergarten Mother

My dearest Mrs Meleney,
The sweet “Alpine Violets”- are giving me so much pleasure, and bringing my thoughts so often to you & yours? It gave me great pleasure- to meet Robert again. What a “ manly” boy he has grown. nay- I ought not to call him “ boy”! I beg
[page 2]
His pardon!- For- he is a “ young man” man. He resembles you- dear mrs. Melaney- very much; only- the “dimples” are not as well developed in his face- as in your dear, sweet face.- Your good letter I received- the with of a” good cheer” and the true Christmas joy! thank you-dearest for writing explicitly. You & Mr
[page 3]
Meleney are truly “reaping” in your joys with the “growing-up” family- what you have soon in devotion & love- when your children were yet small. Whenever I think of a “happy” family- your family rises before my mental eyes.- Dr Jenny B Merril sent me a lovely “New Year’s Greeting” in a roll-call of the Kraus-graduates who are Kgtners under her direction or supervision
[page 4]
In the Public Schools of Manhattan. She says to them: “They are a “Unique company of young women; they are women of individuality, of strong character, faithful to the last degree; I thank you for the training you have given them as well as myself”.- I have had “ hosts” of good letters- from all over the country,- & my heart is filled with the joy- that so many of my former pupils are true to their alma mater- & “ stand” for the Froebelian idea- in all it's truth & beautiful simplicity.
[page 5]
Give “ my love” to all the members of your dear family. What a joy it must be- to have Edmond Home- for a while. I thank him- for the” hip hip” in my behalf. My “gifts” were small- but: my “ love” is Great. -The New Year came to me- quietly- softly- with all the remembrances of Happy “ old time” times. May it be “ full of blessings” to the “ Meleney family”.- I have not been so
[page 6]
“Exuberantly” Well as usual- because- it seems- I cannot get rid of the severe “ cold” Taking hold of me over two months ago.- Thursday my “ class” will be reopen- and I shall try to “ rest” these few days- so as to be ready for my “ love's work”, and- in order to do this, I shall have to “ deny” myself- should any of my friends happened to call.- I long for “ spring- time”,- for
[page 7]
the warm weather. The winter was never friendly to me, & I have to be a little “ careful”, will I carry through “ well”.- Miss Emma is dear. Her “ development” is a joy. We “ love each other”; and- this is a blessing,- as “ otherwise” I would be very “alone.” Young Minds” appeal to me! - Adieu - dearest Carrie Cait! perhaps we may see each other at our “ January social Meeting. I shall try- to make myself strong for the same.
[page 8]
All this-what I said about myself- does not mean- that I feel sick will! Ah no, - only a little “tired”- because of that tiresome, tenacious “cold”.- Once more: May God’s blessing be with you and yours.
Ever - your loving old friend

My dear Mrs Meleney,
Will you & Mr Meleney give me the pleasure and dine with on Saturday December 3rd, at six o’ clock? I have also invited Dr & Mrs Balliet and one or two other friends. I hope, you will both be able, to accept. I want so much to make this a “pleasant” evening! It seems so long- since I saw you socially.
[page 2]
We are all so very busy- each, in his own way. - I hope, that you & your family keep well; & that you have continuous “good news” from your dear about boy.- Anna Harvey tell me, that George Leer is “charming”. How I should have loved to have him my Kgten. I had a severe attack of throat - trouble; and- for nearly a fortnight- talking was painful to me; & I could not speak above
[page 3]
Above a “whisper”.- My “Class-work” is a joy to me; but “outsiders” task me too much; & it is difficult to control that part of my life; but- Mrs Emma is learning to manage often for me. I do want- to have some “free” time- to see my friends- which is such true pleasure to me.- Also- I try, to get some “outside” recreation; and I have heard several of the Ben Greet Shakespeare Plays,- & enjoyed them thoroughly, [protective]

as the “outfit” of Stage &c. Would seem.- The Thanksgiving holidays I may spend- away from the City- a few quiet & restful days. Christmas will soon be at the door. How the time flies!- Adieu, dearest Carrie Cait! My living thoughts are often with you- the you may believe.- Sunday, November 26th, the Froebel- House Committee is to meet at my rooms,- & after the Meeting- take Dinner with me.- Mrs Fitts
[page 5]
Called the Committee together- because Mrs Wheelock was expected in the City- to address the “Woman’s Church” in Brooklyn- the one you wrote to be about.- - Did you see, for what a nice little “comment”. Dr. Ossia Lang made about me in the School- Journal?- Good bye! Hoping, you have not tired yourself too much by setting your house in order,- and also- hoping, you can give me a “ready assent” for December the third, - I am Yours with a heart full of love.
