Mr. Charles C. Adams, Secretary,
Auburn Business Men's Association,
Auburn Savings Bank Building, Auburn, New York.
My dear Sir:
I am in receipt of your very kind invitation of the 14th instant to be a guest at the Auburn Business Men's Association Banquet some time in December. I am strongly disinclined to assure the responsibility of saying that I will be with you, although the spirit to accept your kind invitation moves me deeply. I am so near Auburn, that it does seem as though I could run down some afternoon and return here after the dinner, and I want to assure you that nothing that I can think of would give me greater pleasure. I know many people in Auburn, and my past association with them has been so pleasant that I would like to renew the acquaintance. The date you suggest, December the 8th, would be Friday night, and as far as I can see, would be as favorable a night as any could possibly be. Now, if you will fix that date, and leave it with the understanding that I am to be with you if I possibly can do so, you may rest assured that I will make every effort, with the probabilities largely in favor of my coming. I am engaged here in some very important work, which nothing must interfere with.
Kindly let me know what you want me to talk about if I am able to come, and with best wishes, believe me,
Yours very sincerely,
