My dear Woodruff:-
You must have had a nice time with McCarren. I understand the Democrats took advantage of you, and packed the hall against you. There is nothing the redoubtable Pat would not do, you know, to carry a point.
Now, with reference to the Clerkship on the Assembly, I see by the Sun and the Post that Baxter proposes to violate a promise made. I think it is high time that you who actually know of that promise ought to take the public into your confidence. I have just written every member of the State Committee that I thought it was due to the organization's own self-respect that it stand by itself; that we had no candidates from this part of the State for Clerk; and that we didn't want a candidate foisted upon us again.
Hoping to give you a good report tomorrow night, I am,
Very truly yours,
J. S. Fassett
