My dear Governor:-
Enclosed you will please find letter from the Onondaga Coarse Salt Association in relation to the proposed reduction in the tariff on salt, which covers the ground fairly well.
It should be borne in mind, when considering this tariff, that the English manufacturers can get lower rates of freight to our coast cities than the Americans can obtain from their plants. For instance, it costs the New York manufacturers $2.80 per ton to the New England coast cities, $2.40 per ton from New York to Baltimore, and from $3.20 to $3.50 per ton to the Southern coast cities; whereas the English manufacturers can oftentimes get rates, by sailing vessels, of from four to six shillings per ton, and can therefore reach any city on our coast at from $1.00 to $1.50 per ton. So the present tariff of $1.60 per ton and their low freight rates put them in a good position to compete with us and insure the public against paying any exorbitant price for the goods.
I wish you might bring these facts to the attention of our Senators, in hopes that they will not put our "English Cousins" in a position to take our trade away from us.
Yours very truly
Lorenzo Benedict
