My dear Mrs Meleney
You looked so dis-appointed at my saying, that I could not see you on Tuesday next ! if you had been at the “opening” of the Meeting, you would have heard Bessie Demarest proclaim: that I would not be able to see anybody [wanted] further notice”.- fact is: I have been quite ill for three weeks, and have not

Yet altogether recovered. I have lived a most secluded life,- & shall have to do the same time.- until quite well again. My Doctor tells me : I must not make any [deviations]. As it is, I leave the City each day I am free from my regular duties. I longed to see you all, & hence broke the rule, & was presented this A.M.- My will-power is so great,

That, for the time being, I always subdue my “ailments”. And [son’t] was this A.M. I could even speak with my yet very [hoarse voice],- although I suffered while doing so; and when I left- I felt weak & my knees were shaking. If Mrs Breman had not gone the same way with me, I do not know how I could have reached the Hotel. To-night I feel a little feverish; yet- a restful day to-morrow will

Will set me “to [rights]” so for, that my class-duties will not be interrupted.- You are so sensible & true & will surely accept the explanation. I will answer letters;- that comes “easy” to me,- for I need not speak.- When I am quite well again,- “I will make it a rejoiceful day & “my Children.”- - Our meeting was charming. Bessie Demarest- true as ever; and Dr Merrill covered such an area of this beautiful work, which was “grateful to hear”.- Tell me, what what can I do for you?- Affectionately Yours,

My lecture on jan 5. At the Normal college “finished me,” and since that might- I have been ailing much continuosly.
