My dear Tim:
First - The President feels that the leaders are pursuing a mistaken policy in not showing "the people" instead of the President, that Hughes is weak with somebody else beside the politicians & the gamblers. The horseman, the police, the fireman, the railway men etc should be induced in someway to voice their discontent. As a starter I sent Luther an interview yesterday.
Second - As you know the labor Federation has issued a call for a convention at Rochester the 15 of Sept. My advices from my local labor sharp is that it is likely to be a Bryan Convention
Will you take this up with Williams & also with your other labor sharps & also suggest to Grimes & Aldridge & Odell & Hendricks that they send some of the right sort of delegates.
The Elmira Gompers seemed a resolution but I find it was secured by a trick & does not represent the real situations but Gompers men are quite active working up a Bryan sentiment & he will have some democrats this year he never had before also with us he will lose some. After State Convention I will get a good canvas.
Third - Will come down the 28th if that call is made -
Sloat -
